The time ‘3:27 AM’ flashed from your phone.

You shut off the device, sighing softly. Three more minutes.

Three minutes until the train approached, taking you away from your family, your friends, and your home; the one place you had ever known.

The decision had been made months ago, and you refused to back out now. The University of Eldia welcomed you excitedly through email, accepting your application and granting you a spot on their campus. With all that had happened within the last year, you gladly accepted, needing any reason to get as far from Marly as possible.

When you initially planned this escape you had hoped that somewhere, deep down, you would’ve regretted it.

Leaving with only a duffle bag of the simplest items, removing your sim card and crushing it, cutting up the credit cards your parents had given you. You wanted to regret it all and, more than anything, go running back without anyone knowing you were even gone.

But, the simple truth is, you didn’t.

The thought of your sister waking up in that house alone killed you. Knowing she’d shout your name and search for you, how she’d call your phone and be welcomed by your automatic voicemail, and how she’d ring your parents and tell them yet another one of their children had come up missing.

It killed you, but you didn’t regret it.

How could you regret saving your own life?

The sound of the train interrupted your thoughts, thankfully.

With a final thought, you removed yourself from the metal chair. Taking a final glance around the train station, you absorbed every last aspect of your hometown. And, with a final thought, you entered the train.

‘I’m sorry, goodbye.’
