Love and Roses

The day it happened she had been outside in the loggia, the sun fell over her pale skin like a silk blanket, her light sweat caused loose strands of her hair to stick to her neck and shoulders. Her hair was auburn red and almost glowed with the sunlight, it was back in a loose, messy braid. She was wearing a lovely white dress with a light floral print, it tied nicely in the back.

"Rose! Rose, where are you?" She heard her hand-maiden Josephine call for her. She rushed to get up, hoping for good news. She ran to the common corridor with ease, "did she write? Did she?" she asked excitedly. The woman handed her an envelope, it was sealed with a wax stamp in the shape of a heart, it was addressed to her. With slightly shaky fingers she carefully peeled the sealed envelope open, slowly revealing the tattered paper inside.

"My dear girl, I hope you have been alright without me. The job is going well, I've been told there's a chance I could come home before christmas. I have mailed a set of books I thought you would enjoy, I miss you so so much my love, please be safe, i'll see you as soon as possible.

Mom".

Rose flipped the letter over, trying to see if there was anything else written, but not one more word was on the page. She sighed quietly, knowing her mother was working hard, but just wishing she could be at home with her.

Josephine, gave her an apologetic look, "im sorry deary, as i told her- a girl must not be without her mother- but" she paused and took a breath, letting a warm smile spread across her face, "lunch is ready, there's steaks and sandwiches- even pumpkin pie, your favorite-" she went to continue, but seeing rose was packing a little bag she stopped.

"I'm so sorry Josey- i'm really not hungry, i'm going to the library, but i'll be back for dinner." she explained in a haste, fixing her hair before she rushed out of the house.
