Ao'nung's POV

--

Chaos ensued as I watched Ikrans circle above our heads. People launched themselves into the sea in front of them, trying to get the home advantage. On the off chance these Na'vi were hostiles we needed to be prepared. I held my spear in my right hand, putting my left of Tsireya's shoulder. She was unarmed, waiting impatiently for the group to land. As they got closer I could see they were darker blue and leaner than the people from here. We all backed up giving them space to land their Ikrans. A tall man, presumably their father, led his family. Two boys after him, a woman, and three girls. The first man had his hands slightly raised, bent at the elbows to show that he meant no harm. His sons repeated his actions, seeming to tiptoe in his footsteps. My father appeared from the crowd, a stern look on his face. "Jake Sully," he acknowledged.

Jake nodded in return, his eyes shifting to the people who surrounded him and his family. I'd lessened my grip on my spear, at this point no longer seeing any threat. My mother parted a path for herself, seemingly effortlessly. She reached the family and examined them. "What do you want from us?"

"We seek shelter," Jake hesitated, "from the Sky People."

I let out a little snicker. There was no way we would let them stay. Father spoke my thoughts, "The Omaticaya Clan is at war. We are not."

"I'm done with war," Jake looked back at his family, "I just want to keep my family safe."

His two older daughters smiled at him, encouraging him to keep speaking. Suddenly, the one on the left's eyes met mine, for a moment. Before I could process that we'd made eye contact, her gaze was on the ground. Her sister took her hand loosely in hers, squeezing it once for comfort. Her eyes didn't leave the sand.

"You are not built for the water. Your skills are useless here," Mother said. She walked to the family, taking one of the brother's hands, examining them in her's. She suddenly hissed, raising his hand. "They are not even true Na'vi!" she exclaimed, "They have demon blood!"

My spirits soared. These outsiders weren't even Na'vi; father would never let them stay! "We can adapt! I was a Sky Person, and now I'm Na'vi," Jake explained.

My father began to think, but my mother was set. "They have the blood of the demons!" She hollered, riling up the crowd.

The woman Na'vi stepped towards my mother, "My husband was Toruk Makto. He led the clans to victory in the war against the Sky People."

I stepped forward, sensing a fight. Jake grimaced, while mother denounced his bravery. This set off the family, the two women hissing at each other. "I apologize for my mate, Neytiri," Jake said, Neytiri hitting his arm, "we've flown a very long way and are very tired."

I walked around the family, my eyes landing on their sons. I reached my hand out pulling on their tails. He whipped around, pulling his tail close to him. "Freaks," I whispered.

Jake looked back, giving the younger a stern look. They kept their eyes forward, ignoring me. My father spoke next. "Toruk Makto and his family will stay with us," he said, "Teach them the way of the water, so that they do not suffer the embarrassment of being useless."

I scoffed, not only were they staying in our home, but they were also bringing their battles with them, whether they knew it or not. Refuge would not be found here. I would make sure of it. "My children, Ao'nung and Tsireya, will teach your children," my father said.

My ears perked up hearing my name, but then immediately fell against my head again. I let out a sigh, opening my mouth to voice my complaints, but my eyes met the same Na'vi from before, and my words caught in my throat. This time she didn't look away. Her yellow eyes met mine, and she held them there. I broke eye contact first, looking away from her. My eyes fell on the horizon, looking out into the direction the family came from. I wondered how far they travelled.

Just then Tsireya bounded over to us, pushing my spear into my torso, "Let me show you to your marui!" She said excitedly.

I noticed her gaze land on the younger of the two brothers. It lingered there for just a moment too long. She grabbed onto one of the girl's arms. "What's your name?" she asked the girl whose arm was in her's.

"Kiri," she responded simply.

"Kiri," repeated Rotxo, barely loud enough for me to hear.

I rolled my eyes. I don't understand how everyone was falling for the tree-swinging forest freaks. They looked strange, with dark skin, bright eyes, and lean bodies, no doubt built for the forests. I fell a few steps behind, looking at the family. I overheard Tsireya talk to each of them, gathering their names, but I only half listened. Neteyam and Kiri, who were very close in age, due to Kiri's adoption. Lo'ak, the middle child, and Tuk, the youngest.

I started listening closer. Tsireya turned to the mystery Na'vi, and asked her name. "Y/n," she answered looking over her shoulder at her mother. As her head was about turn back, she glanced at me. Just barely making eye contact.

Barely.

Neytiri and Jake were their parents, Palulukan Makto and Toruk Makto. They were incredibly strong warriors, but being out of their element has been hard for them both. We arrived at their new marui, and they set the few belongings they'd brought from home on the floor. Tsireya turned to the family, "We'll let you settle in for a bit! I'll be back tomorrow morning to start your lessons."

We both turned around and made for the door, ready to be done with the awkward encounter with the Sully's. Tsireya spoke up when we were back on the sandy beach, "What do you think of them?"

"They will be slow in the water. You can't teach them to evolve into us."

She smacked my arm, "Have faith, brother. Toruk Makto was a Sky Person, and I believe he's just as much Na'vi as you and I. They can adapt."

I scoffed, pondering the family, dissecting their behaviors. Even they didn't want to be here. I could see it on Lo'ak's face when my father made his announcement. We split off, me starting on my hunting, and Tsireya going home to her chores.

All I could think about was the what if's what came with harboring the Sully family.
