Things come to a head at 3 am one night when Jamie busts into my room and word vomits "pack, hunters, preserve, need our help" and I quickly react, running to my closet and putting on my gear. I mentioned our family is composed of warriors, but not to what extent. See, I grew up riding horses because my Grandpa and Dad can both summon horses out of water. Not only does this mean that they can't be taken out by arrows & bullets, it also means we can't fall off of them due to the magic which creates them. I don't ask anymore, I just get on and go. Dad summons the horses, we jump on, and are quickly carried into the preserve, coming into the fight within minutes. The puppy pack is outnumbered 2-1 by hunters, and I panic when I realize Alec is on the ground, not dead but hurt. I'm well equipped with a bow and arrows, and quickly move my horse in between him and the advancing hunters. Between us and them, we end things quickly, and I'm ever thankful for the face mask and complicated helmet systems we use because Theo stares into my soul as he stands between me and Alec as Liam checks Alec out on the ground.
"He's ok." Liam announces after a minute. I nod, and just then my dad whistles, signaling our departure. I can feel eyes on my back as we leave, not bothering to turn around. As soon as we jump off, the horses return to water, and we return to bed. Dad had packed my incision scar with herbs Grandpa had brought to keep the pain and swelling at bay so I could shoot, proving to work wonderfully. The next day in school I'm back in my sling though, and getting an interesting look from one certain member of the Puppy Pack. Alec, however, is much more subdued than normal, until I get him to finally cheer up in History with a retelling of one of my favorite stories of how we locked Vince in a dog kennel on accident. Leaving class with him laughing puts a smile on my face, and certainly catches the attention of the two senior members of the Puppy Pack who are waiting for Alec and Nolan to leave class.
"Catch y'all later." I smile, turning to go towards my locker where Vince and I meet before going out to Jamie's truck.
"Hey Selah!" I hear, before turning around to face Liam who looks suspicious. Uh oh.
"What's up?"
"How's your shoulder these days?" He asks, and I see the wheels turning in his head. Theo is impossible to read, but he's studying me, very closely.
"It's better, I was able to shower last night and wash my hair on my own for the first time." I had been going to the local hair salon to get it washed, since the lady was letting me bring my own shampoo and just helping me out as an apparent favor to Lydia, who is apparently a member of the older pack.
"Really?" He asks, and dang I gotta get him off my tail.
"Yeah, that was about all I could do, had to take a strong pain med again after." None of which is a lie, all of which did happen, just at 4 am, after our impromptu assistance to their pack.
"Still that sore?" Theo asks, and I nod.
"Yeah, doctor said it would be about a 5-6 week recovery in a sling and months after that before it's full strength." I say, causing a raised eyebrow.
"5-6? Shoulder separation should be a 6 week minimum." Oh crap, I forgot I was talking to Theo Raeken, biology and chemistry genius not to mention he knows almost every surgery possible.
"I dunno man, it's only been three and I'm going decent for that I guess." He nods, and ends the conversation with a "tell Jamie we'll be over tonight after 5" and then leaves, everyone else in tow.A/N: shorter chapter because it's hard to split into smaller chunks!
