annabel
heaven, annabel discovered, actually was a beautiful place in the glorious blue sky. the only difference? there weren't any pearly gates you needed to open to get there. annabel discovered her heaven at the ripe age of five when her father took her on her first flight. with her tiny hands pressed up against the window, she felt right at home. from then on, she and her father would spend more hours together in the air than on land.

hell on the other hand, was having to entertain another one of her father's hair-brained missions that, statistically would always work, but never fail to make her chew on the tips of her nails for a little longer than she normally would. her heart would tighten and her throat would close up as she watched her father preform a task so unfathomable only he could cook it up in his wild mind.

with her help and planning of course.

often, she'd wonder why she even got nervous anymore. after all, her father had proven himself to be invincible. no matter how many times he tried to endanger his life, he was never successful. annabel knew that, even though his wild nature was what pushed her mom away and eventually out of their lives, she loved it about her father. all of his personality traits trickled right down to her and sometimes she felt like she was simply a carbon copy of the famous pete 'maverick' mitchell.

the other times, she knew she was smarter than he was. albeit not more skilled, though she was working on that too.

and her father never let her forget it either.

which is precisely what led her to meet her father at his hanger bright and early this morning. he had been researching an airplane that could reach mach ten. annabel was most of the brains behind the operations and her father was going to fly it.

after graduating top gun three years ago, annabel deployed far from her father and the united states. she became the first female pilot to shoot down five enemy aircraft and the fastest and youngest pilot to ever achieve the feat. after much pleading from her father, she returned to the united states and went back to school to earn a ph.d. in aerospace engineering which she was currently working on.

this project started when, in one of her favorite lectures, she professor explained how mach ten simply wasn't physically possible. from then on, she sought out to prove him wrong and her father had just the right connections to make it happen.

this project was her brainchild and she would be damned if she was going to miss it finally being born.

so, bright and early at 4:30 this morning, she drove right behind her father to his hangar.

when they reached the hangar, annabel and her father walked inside matching each other stride for stride. she brushed off his comment about needing to drive slower, her nerves threatening to get the best of her if she didn't repress them.

hondo and the rest of the members of the team annabel had assembled shuffled around the gorgeous airplane. she felt the tension in the air.
"hondo? what's wrong?" she questioned, slinging her bag onto the nearest table.
