The river crashed against the rocks, singing a soft comforting melody. A boy, small and with black hair smiled and giggled as he made a flower crown. He looked across the roaring river to see a boy with white hair trying to make a flower crown. But the flowers seemed to wilt when he touched them, it seemed to dishearten him every time.
His hair was so fluffy and long, he stood out from the darkened forest behind him. He was so stunning, his eyes were a soft brown and his hair looked soft too.
The boy wondered why he couldn't hold the flowers like he could, why did they wilt at his touch. He decided he'd ask his mother later, surely she'd tell him! Maybe she'd tell him his name too! Maybe she'd let him cross the river to talk to him. He looked so soft and kind, so it wouldn't hurt to try!
Mother hadn't let him go down and befriend any of the mortals, and he never had been able to meet any of the others. She'd told him to befriend some of the Fai in her garden, but they only spoke of the flowers and never of the world. So maybe the lost soul across the river could be a friend for rain or shine! The Fai had always been fair weather friends, only there for the happy times. They'd never spoken to him about all the wrongs mortals did upon one another.
And why should they? Mother had created them just so he'd stop asking for friends.
He didn't realize he'd been staring until the boy across the river made a strange noise and moved to be mostly out of sight.
On instinct, he yelled out a "Sorry!" Before he lightly hid his face in his hands.
Roses of red and white popped out of his hair, he could feel it. He really didn't mean to scare the boy from across the river!
He heard footsteps, and then looked up. The boy was back! He had some beautiful crystalline flowers in his hands this time.
He was confused for a moment before realizing this was an invitation to show him how to make flower crowns.
He excitedly picked some flowers and started to show the boy what to do. He gently braided flowers together until he had a beautiful crown that was colorful.
He looked across to see the other boy with a proud smile and a similar crown.
Soon though, the boy looked sad and disappeared into the dark forest behind him.
He frowned a bit after the lost soul disappeared into the dark forest behind him. He knew soon he'd have to go back to his mother again, and the Fai. His mood sufficiently dampened, he walked back to the garden. Purple Hyacinths, white and yellow Mums, Lilies, and Forget-me-nots grew in his wake. The ground below him felt his sadness, as did his powers. Though, before he reached the garden, he paused, wiping the sadness from himself. He remembered the boy from across the roaring river and felt himself smile, roses bloomed in his hair as he entered the garden.
His mother ran up to him and fretted over him as soon as he got into the garden.
"Gabriella! Gabriella! Where were you my little star?" His mother worriedly cupped his face.
He frowned at being called that, his name wasn't Gabriella, his name was Garrett! How many times would he have to tell her?
"Mother, it's Garrett! I'm not a baby girl!" He protested, it was in futility. He still tried though.
"No. It has always been Gabriella, my little star. But nevermind that, where have you been?"
He reminded himself that he was meant to be a girl, so a girl is what he was in her eyes.
"I was by the river mother! I saw a boy. I never caught his name. I was hoping you might tell me!"
His mother seemed excited by that, believing he'd finally befriended one of the Fai.
"What was he like, my little star? How did he look?"
He smiled as he remembered the boy, then began to describe him. "He had white hair, it looked really fluffy! His eyes were brown. He didn't talk, but I showed him how to make a flower crown. He used flowers that seemed to be made of crystals, because normal ones seemed to wilt at his touch"
She frowned, what part of what he said made her upset alluded him.
"That boy is nothing but trouble, he is of death. You should not ever speak to him again."
He was upset at that and looked at her. He disagreed, what was so wrong with being of death? He dared not speak his disagreement with her though, as he'd rather not be stopped from seeing him again.
"Mother, could you at least tell me his name? I'm curious."
"His name is something you need not know!"
Garrett sighed and left, going off to go to sleep. Mother didn't like the boy, and wanted him to not either.
Though, mother was often wrong about things that were related to who he should like and speak to, as well as him. So he believed himself justified in wanting to see the boy again. The boy had done nothing wrong, so why shouldn't he see him again.
He smiled a little as he fell asleep, excited to see the boy again. He wondered why mother said that he was "of death". The boy had not done anything ill of her, he'd done nothing wrong! So why was adamant he not speak to him again? He decided he couldn't care less, and that he'd meet the boy again soon. He hoped it'd be the next day.
He smiled, his day ended on thoughts about the boy from across the river. The lost soul had buried himself into the boy's thoughts, and Garrett couldn't be any happier about it.
Garrett may have found a true friend, someone who may be there for the good and bad.
