Perhaps she was too deep in love that her emotions blinded her.
Perhaps life has been a whole joke, and everyone has been making a fool out of her.
The young woman wiped the tears from her face while putting her belongings in the luggage.
On the day she needed them the most, her world was shattered when she found out that her high school boyfriend had cheated on her with her best friend. The pain and betrayal were overwhelming for the young woman, who had been in a relationship with her boyfriend for several years.
How she wished she had been struck by lightning that stormy night, so she might have woken up from the nightmare.
But unfortunately, this was her reality.
She never would have dreamed of having her heart shattered into a million pieces.
She remembered it all too well: that night, she came back to her and her partner's apartment after a demanding shift as a medical resident, and saw him and her friend locked in a passionate embrace on their shared bed.
The skies seemed to mirror her misery as the rain descended in a melancholy downpour. Maybe the raindrops were taking the place of the tears she couldn't shed, a reminder of the depth of her heartache she felt on that fateful evening.
She couldn't bring herself to pretend that it didn't hurt. The betrayal from both of them had shattered her trust, leaving her feeling raw and wounded. The harsh words they'd spoken that night still echoed in her mind, and their complete lack of remorse only added to her pain. The wounds they had inflicted felt like they would never fully heal.
"They don't deserve your tears," She reminded herself.
She cast one last gaze around the room, bidding farewell to its familiar comfort, then gathered her belongings and set off for the airport, her heart weighed down by a whirlwind of emotions.
As she boarded the plane, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. The engines roared to life, and the plane took off into the sky.
Perhaps she might have been too hasty to drop everything and leave. To abandon a profession that she worked so tirelessly to attain. To leave behind what was familiar and leap into the unknown.
Yes, that's exactly it.
She felt the turbulence and the pressure changes, but it was nothing compared to the turbulence in her heart. She opened her eyes and looked out the window, watching as the city below her became smaller and smaller.
A place somewhere she could just escape and leave behind her old life. A place where no one will recognise her. A place where she couldn't even recognise herself.
Los Santos.
