CONRAD DIDN'T THINK HE'D STILL BE 'DATING' QUINN BY HIS BIRTHDAY. When he agreed to 'date' her, he thought it would be over in a month. He hoped that the school and his friends had enough faith in him to realise he wasn't a bad guy. That if someone as superficial as Quinn Sorrentino, could see he wasn't so bad, then everyone else would realise it too. In all fairness, it wasn't like the two of them had been doing the best job at pretending they were in love. But it was so hard to love somebody so frustrating. But after the whole Grace/Aubrey/Julliard fiasco, Conrad realised that Quinn was just a really angry girl who had been neglected her whole life.

She wasn't so bad either.

Conrad didn't care for his birthday but his mom did. She adore birthdays. She always made it such a big event like she did for every holiday. Despite his wishes, Susannah had insisted on a garden party which was not Conrad's taste at all but for her he'd do anything. He let his mom decorate their garden into the perfect cottage-core picnic. It wasn't really Conrad's style but whatever made his mom happy.

Conrad's birthday began with breakfast in bed. His mom made waffles and cinnamon butter and with a cup of coffee and a brand new watch. Susannah kissed her son's head before she went downstairs to continue her birthday planning.

Jeremiah barely registered his brother's birthday. He came downstairs at noon, still in his pyjamas and slapped Conrad on the back as a grumbled happy birthday. Later on, when he'd woken up more, Jeremiah finally presented his gift which was a Boston Bruins jersey.

Conrad got dressed as his mom set up the garden. He planned to go to the beach where he spent every birthday for the past four years. Birthdays often brought up a lot of bad feelings along with the good so he liked going to the beach the clear his head. It was a bit of a drive but the ocean calmed him in a way that was almost heavenly.

Conrad was in the kitchen, putting on his new watch. His mom was outside but the door was wide open in the warm spring air. Susannah popped her head through the patio doors. "Connie. I was thinking, maybe you should invite Quinn tonight. I would love to meet her."

"Oh-um-" Conrad fumbled. He wasn't sure what to say because he couldn't actually decide if he wanted Quinn there or not. "I don't know, mom. She's probably really busy."

"Just ask her." Susannah encouraged. When she saw the hesitation on her son's face, she said, "For me?"

That was all she needed to say for him to agree.

Conrad left the house at one. The dinner wasn't until five. He drove in silence towards the beach. No radio just the windows open and the sound of birds and the highway.

It was a forty-five minute drive to the beach. When he arrived the waves were steady. Conrad sat himself on the sand and quietly watched the waves rock back and forth. The seaside air was chilly but the wind was steady and didn't bother Conrad at all.
