The night was silent, eerily so.  No breeze to offer any movement or sound.  The stars shone in the far distance with no clouds to cover them up.  No crickets, no critters, but something was in this forest.

Me and the other demons sat around a low table, my knees aching against the solid ground.  I strongly disliked the dirt smearing my robes but I waited nonetheless.  The demons looked tense, their bodies stiff.  A small sliver of satisfaction slithered into my mind.

I had no reason to be scared like they were.  I was a favorite of our master's.  He wouldn't hurt me under any circumstance.  Pride swelled in my chest, my posture straightening in response.  I eagerly awaited his presence and approval.

Our dinner had been waiting for us when we had gathered here on schedule as we did everyday.  The others had demolished the flesh in mere seconds.  Their appetites had blinded them and led them to break a family rule.  Me, on the other hand, had stayed behind to witness the realization dawn on them, the horror crossing their blood stained faces.

We all quickly sat down in harmony and now we wait.  Containing my laughter was going to be difficult, I just couldn't help it.  They were absolute fools and it showed daily.  They just couldn't stop being failures.

A familiar smell wafted through the air, tickling my nose.  I inhaled deeply but didn't turn my head.  Soft footsteps traveled our way.  His robes rustled quietly in the night.  My mind fell into instant calm, unlike the others who trembled where they sat.  He stopped at the head of the table.  Rui, lower moon 5, my master and companion.  Seconds stretched by with nothing said.

"What is one of our biggest rules?"  His voice sent happy shivers down my spine.  I lifted my head at the sound to find him looking straight at me intensely.  I desperately kept a straight face and answered with an apathetic drawl for good measure.

"We eat as a family, together," I stated.  Ripples of anxiety passed through the other demons.  Rui only nodded once.  His hands slammed down onto the table making the others flinch.

"We eat as a family," he growled.  "So why did you selfishly take only for yourselves?"  The venom dripping in his voice was enough to kill.  No one dared reply, it would be of no use.

He lashed out quickly with his webs.  Cries rang out as they tightened around each demon, me being spared.  Biting my lip, I repressed a smirk.  Rui made quick work of the demons, constricting their bodies in unbreakable, poison lined silk and tying them up in the air.  Faint screams from the pain echoed through the forest.

Rui turned to me.  I looked up at him from the floor.  He blinked slowly before gesturing for me to stand.  I rose slowly and began dusting off my clothes.

"Well that was eventful," I proclaimed.  He merely gave me a knowing stare before walking off.  I strode to his side, walking in step with him.  His hand brushed against mine briefly making my body tingle.  His expression remained plain.

"Oh Rui, you're not too upset are you?" I inquired softly.  His head tilted slightly but his eyes narrowed.  My chest tugged slightly.

"They're not anything like a family."  He was clearly frustrated, maybe even disappointed.  All he seemed to want was a functional family, however it was like he didn't quite understand the concept.  He has been focusing on control rather than the caring, loving side.  My poor comrade was doomed for an eternity of failed attempts.  I haven't exactly been helping either, snickering at my "family's" punishment probably wasn't loving or caring.

With a sigh I grabbed Rui's hand, lacing our fingers together.  He didn't pull away and as I side eyed him teasingly my expression softened instantly.  His usual scowling face was crumbling right before my eyes.  His frown turned to a trembling pout, his eyes turned down and vulnerable.  His expression was nothing less of hopelessness.  My heart ached at the sight.

"Oh Rui, it's going to be ok.  I know they're not perfect but we're trying for you," I reassured him.  He glanced my way curiously.  He squeezed my hand sadly.

"You play your part perfectly."  I startled at the statement, my cheeks flushing proudly as I stopped to stare at him.  He took the opportunity to clasp my other hand, our bodies facing each other straight on.  Staring wide eyed and shocked at our hands I tried to register what Rui said. Playing my part perfectly.

"What is my part?" I stuttered silently.  His silver eyes bore into mine with a new intensity that made my skin crawl.  He leaned forward, his breath tickling my ear.

"My pretty little plaything that knows just what to say," he whispered.  My breath hitched, mind racing, legs trembling.  Pride washed through my body in heart stopping waves.

A wistful sigh blew past my mouth.  Rui pushed his lips to my neck quickly before retreating from my skin.  The spot warmed despite the freezing contact of our undead bodies.  A sly smile revealed my teeth to him, eyes narrowing in defiance.  He wore his own knowing smile and soul piercing gaze.

"I love you Rui," I whispered in challenge.  His hands clutched my own tighter in a death grip, his nails digging into my flesh.  A small blush dusted his cheeks, complimenting the markings across his face.  Yanking my hand, he continued walking on with me in tow.  His stride had a new purpose.

I should've felt disappointed with his lack of response but instead there was a burst of satisfaction.  That blush was answer enough.

Watching his face while trying to keep up I saw the smallest and most sincere of smiles tug at his lips.  I chuckled lightly with another tug of my arm being his response.

"Careful Rui, your soft side is showing," I sneered.  He merely glared back, offering a wink.  I knew where we were headed and took delight in the destination he had in mind.

Suddenly I was forced to sit by him, my robes dragging my body to the ground.  I grunted at the suddenness before a body pushed against mine abruptly.  Rui had forced me to sit by our favorite tree and was now laying on my lap, legs straddling my body, hands grasping my robes tightly.  His head lay against my shoulder, a small pout on his face.  Pulling him closer and nuzzling into his soft hair we got comfortable as we usually did at this spot.

He played rough with others but treated me like his favorite toy, a prized possession with a few times like this where he just wanted to be looked out for, cuddled and loved.

I gently kissed his head letting my own walls come down.  He held on tighter.  I traced patterns on his back trying to calm him down while hoping he didn't try to fall asleep.  He still needed to cut down the other demons before sunrise.

"I love you."  The quiet mumble echoed in the silence of my being.  Holding tighter, I allowed a few flutters of my heart.

"I know Rui."
