CHAPTER 2

                 June 24, 2004

  “Riku! Wake up.” Sora said, shaking Riku.

Riku grumbled and got up from the dirty gym mat he found, they took cover in an abandoned motel, it was the best place they found since the outbreak.

  “What is it sora?” Riku asked while yawning.

  “Isn't it time to go?” Sora asked.

Riku looked at his watch, it was 12:30, way past the time they were supposed to leave.

  “Shit, we have to go, get your things and wake up kairi.” he said.

Sora got up and headed to the bed where kairi was sleeping, he gently shook her to wake her up, riku rolled up his mat and hooked it to his backpack.

  “Is it 10:00 already?” kairi asked.

  “Later than that, but we still have daylight so we should be good.” riku said.

They all got their things and headed out, the sky was gray and the grass was dry yet overgrown.

  “Man, I had the craziest dream, I'm never eating expired hot dogs in a can again.” Sora said.

  “I didn't even know those were a thing, I can't believe you ate them.” kairi said.

  “I was hungry!” he said.

  “You're always hungry.” kairi giggled.

  “I know hehe” he said while putting his hands behind his head.

  “Did you dream about anything riku?” kairi asked.

He did dream about something, but he didn't want to share it, he feared it would ruin the atmosphere.

  “Nah, I kinda passed out.” He lied.

  “You always say that.” Sora said.

  “Well it's true, I don't dream about much very often,” he said.

But that was a lie, he did dream, but they weren't good dreams, they were nightmares, nightmares about Kairi and Sora, about awful things that might happen to them if he didn't protect them, sometimes they get bad that he doesn't sleep so he doesn't dream about it. Riku takes out a map, he trails with his finger on where to go next.

  “There's a QZ west from here, we can make it before the sun goes down.” 

Sora and Kairi look over his shoulder, seeing how far it would be from where they are standing.

  “That's like a bajillion miles from here Riku!” sora said.

  “I know it's far but it'll feel like nothing, trust me ok?” Riku said.

Sora pouted a bit.

  “We didn't even have breakfast yet.” Sora whined.

Riku chuckled and shook his head, he reached into his backpack and took out a can, he tossed it to Sora with him barely catching it.

  “Here, it's the last one, so make it count,” He said.

  “Thanks, ooh beef stew, my favorite.”

  “Oh that reminds me, thanks for letting me use the bed, you really didn't have to.” Kairi said.

  “It's alright, the bed was too soft for me.” Riku said.

Kairi noticed Riku rubbing his neck out of discomfort, she felt bad about taking the bed, but that's just Riku's nature, but sometimes she wishes he wouldn't baby her so much, sometimes she wishes she can take care of him once in a while.

  “Kairi, what are you waiting for?” Sora said waving to her.

Kairi snapped out of her trance, she jogged to where they where, when she caught up to them they all headed west to the nearest QZ.

After awhile they were in a dilapidated city, it was one of the bigger cities in their state, they had to climb over cars that were piled over each other, they kept walking until the path was cut off by a building.

  “Too high to climb and too messed up to go through it, we have to go around.” Riku said.

They went to a nearby building, it used to be what seemed like a high end hotel or a bank, either way it was crawling in vegetation, then riku noticed something.

  “Wait, there's fungi on the floor, there might be infected here, get out your guns.” he said while shielding them back.

They each got out a gun, Riku getting out his sniper rifle, they went through the dark hall in silence, looking through every crevice just in case, sora noticed something on the counter of the reception desk.

  “Hey, check it out!” He said excitedly.

  “Sora, be quiet!” Riku whispered.

  “Kairi you used to have one of these!'' Sora said, holding a Tomogachi.

  “Yeah but, i think we should listen to Riku, there could be infected.” She said.

  “Relax, we haven't seen any yet, I'm sure where fine!” He said.

Just then, they heard something coming from the darkness, an infected, they reared their guns at the sound, ready to shoot at any moment's notice, just then one popped out and lunged at them, they started to shoot but kept missing, the infected attacked sora but he dropped his gun, he tried to keep him away from him as not to let him bite him until his head exploded from Riku's rifle, blood was all over sora's face.

  “Pfft, thanks Riku, ugh” He said while spitting out some blood.

  “No problem, but we need to get out of here, who knows how many there are here,” He said.

They walk through the darkness, trying to find a way out, they go through dark halls that smell like mildew with vines hanging from the ceiling while water drips. They find a light at the end of the tunnel, literally and go for it, they're on the other side of the building that was blocking their path.

  “Ahh finally out of there, I hope I can find a stream to wash this off.” Sora said.

  Both Riku and Kairi laugh, but their laughter was cut short, they saw a tall man running towards them, Riku pulled out his rifle and aimed towards him.

  “Sora! Get behind me!” Riku yelled.

Sora looked behind him and saw the man, he ran to rikus side with his gun to the man as well.

  “Don't take another step!” Riku yelled.

The man stopped, they couldn't see his face from the bandanna mask and black hoodie he was wearing.

  “Take off your mask! Now!” Riku demanded.

The man obeyed, he took off his mask and hoodie, under was spiky red hair and blue green eyes.

  “Look, I don't want to hurt you, but I need help, please.” he said.

  “Why should we help you, we barely know you.” Riku said.

  “Riku!” Kairi said.

  “What, it's true, why should we trust him.”

  “Because I have something you want.” the man said.

  “And what is that?” riku said.

  “Sora, is it, I know where your brothers and sister are.” He said.

  “Sora lowered his gun and gasped, he hasn't seen them in two years, he thought they might have been dead but, could it be true?

  “I just need your help, just a small favor.” 

  “What is that favor?” Riku said.

  “I need you to help me to get my friend, everyone, out of the cult.” The man said.
