Memphis's POV
I woke in a daze. The sun appeared to be a bright blurr in the sky. I felt figures around me though, and I knew I wasn't alone.
"He's coming back." A voice spoke that sounded very close, too close.
"Yep, okay what do we do, what do we say?" Another voice stuttered.
My vision began to clear and I could make out what the figures were, horses. Oh no, "please don't be the same herd I saw earlier," I pleaded to my thoughts.I bounded through the air in one quick movement at an attempt to get up, but didn't succeed.
"Everyone back up." A different voice this time hissed.
All of the horses started to back up. I tried again in a quick leap and this time I managed to get myself on my own four feet. I felt sharp pains striking my body like tiny knives. I gave out a shriek of pain.
"Oh my!" one of the horses gasped.
"Look at those wounds!" Another sqeaked.
I stretched my neck around to my side to get a good look at myself, and it horrified me. There were deep wounds around the sides of my stomach from the cougar. Some parts even had bits of flesh hanging open. Panic rushed through me and I began to think "what if these wounds won't heal" and "what if no one can help."
"Oh darling, you are hurt bad," a mare sorrowfully stated.
My eyes gazed around the group, pleading to anyone who could help me.
"Let's get him to a clear area," the same mare advised.
They started leading me to an appropriate area. We came to an abrupt halt.
"Here," a stallion huffed.
It seemed to me that this stallion was the leader of the group and I noted to myself to act carefully around him.I slumped down to the ground in the clearing. There was a river with calm, soothing waters that danced by with delicacy. How I wished to jump into that river to ease the unbearable burning feeling at my sides, but I knew it would only rip apart the wounds even more.
The mare circled me with concern filling her eyes.
"Stand up now, I must observe the damage and I can't do that with you lying down, can I."
I slowly made my way up off the ground, every muscle screaming at me while I did so. Once I was up, the mare haulted at my wounded side.
"Ya, that's nasty alright." She confirmed, so comforting don't you think?
"You must stay off the ground, that includes no daily rolling, understood? We can't have it getting infected."
"I guess."
"Good."It had been a few days and things had started to change. My wounds started to heal and the pain that came with it decreased. The mares in the group started warming up to me, but the stallion wouldn't. I could tell he was starting to get jealous of the attention and time the mares were spending with me.
It was mid-day of the next day that things went horribly wrong. I was casually eating grass with the mares beside me, when the stallion made a bold move.
"You there!" He called.
I swung my head around to see what the commotion was. His eyes focused on me, piercing through my soul with hatred.
"Yes?" I timidly responded.
"If the mares seem to like you so much, why don't you be the stallion of the herd." He scoffed.
"Ok?" I responded.
At this point I was just down right confused, so I just kind of said whatever.
"Show me then." The stallion demanded.
What does he mean show me?
"Come on now, you're not scared are you?" He humiliated me.
His musclular body stood strong, his veins puffed out with anger.
"Now just wait a minute....."
Before I could finish, he through himself into a gallop straight towards me. I just froze there, with nothing processing in my brain, well don't I feel safe. When he came too close for comfort, I reared into the air to stop him and he did the same. A sharp pain shot through my leg as our hooves connected together in mid-air. I pounded my front hooves back down on the ground making small hops as I did so. I let out a shriek of pain as the stallion kicked my shoulder with a great amount of force.
"What? Can't take it?" He teased.
Before he could create another hard blow with his hoof, I turned around and kicked into the air with my hind legs and put every amount of force I had in me into it. I heard him let out a deathly shriek that was followed by a blood curdling moan. I turned around quickly to see the damage I had created and was sickened at the image. I had ended up connecting with his neck and the results weren't pretty. Some skin hung from the nasty wound that was continuing to seep blood. The skin of the wound that was still on, was sunken into the neck. I felt a true feeling of horror, how could I have done this?
"I'm so sorr......"
"This isn't over. You may have won this time, but I will get my herd back."
"I never wanted any of this, and for all I care, you can have the damn herd back."
He slumped away in a limp.
"I will never be in anyone's debt." He mumbled as he limped away.
"Where are you going?" I asked, feeling completely perplexed.
"I must leave now, I lost my herd." He choked out, with sputters of sadness sqeezing his voice.
I never wanted to cause any of this pain. I could tell this herd meant everything to him and I couldn't take this away from him.
"This herd can't go on without you, so get back over here and lead the group!"
He slightly turned his head to focus one eye on me. He was deep in thought and was definitely considering the option.
"We can lead together." I reassured him.
"If it makes you feel any better, but it's probably better if you lead the group by yourself," I continued.
"No I won't have that!" He snapped.
"We shall lead together if this is going to work."
"Fine by me," I smirked. It had been about a week and I had finally started to settle in with the herd. I punched myself on the inside every time I even advertise the thought, but I am finally not mourning to get back to Jennifer. She was an amazing owner and I will never forget her, but I have lost hope and found it in this herd. It's time for me to move on, as for her too.
Hey everyone,
Thankyou to everyone who has supported this book with your encouraging comments and votes. The book is almost over! Leave me comments if you want a sequel, but i sorta feel like this is one of those books that don't really have anything more to write about after the first so please leave a comment.
Also, I will be starting a new book and wanted to ask what you think it should be about. I am thinking about something along the lines of bullying matters because i am strongly against bullying and have experienced my fair share of it and it's now a part of who i am to stand against it. So tell me if you agree or disagree and have a different idea for my new book. Thanks for all your support! :)
