Aonungs ears twitched at the sound of the clan horns being blown, the large shells bellowed across the reef signalling Lo'aks return, a fresh wash of relief fell over him, though an itching feeling still lingered in the back of his mind. The storm was still raging, pounding against the shore, he was sure Neteyam wasn't stupid enough to go past the reef and that he'd return soon, he'd lost sight of the Omatikayan once he'd left the shore, the blanket of rain and waves shielding the boy from Aonungs sight. He didn't want to see the Omatikayan right now anyway, he was still irritated.
Aonung was by his fathers side, pressed down into the sand by the man's hand, his knees beginning to ache under the pressure. The Metkayinan heirs' ears were pressed to his head, eyes trained to the floor as the Olo'eyktan and Toruk Makto decided what to do with their rebellious sons. The clan's watchful eyes bore into him, he supposed he should be used to it now but it still made him shift uncomfortably, the weight of his fathers hand quickly pushed him down, forcing him to still, grip loosening slightly as Loak spoke.
"No this is not Aonungs fault, it was my idea, Aonung tried to talk me out of it. Really." Lo'ak challenged, stepping forward towards the Olo'eyktan, his expression steadfast and strong.
Aonungs throat tightened as his gaze met the Omatikayan, guilt sinking through him. Why would Loak protect him like that? After all he's done to him and his family, he didn't deserve that treatment.
"Sir he's lyi-" Aonung starts but before he can finish his father pulls him roughly up by the arm, making him stumble to the side."Is this true?" He speaks, voice firm, his grip on Aonung still ever present.
Before he can speak his mother cuts him off "Aonung what were you thinking?" She cuts in, practically hissing her words.
Aonung flinches away from her, ears pressed flat. His parents must hate him by now.
"Im sorry" he spoke, voice meek as he wavered under their stares. He wanted to run, to escape them, but his fathers hold kept him at bay, trapping him.
The gathered clan members begin to disperse as the commotion dies down, heading back to their marui pods for the night. His father hisses, pushing him forward, finally releasing his tight hold on Aonung, "Go apologise, you have brought shame to this family." He spits, reprimanding his son. Aonung doesn't dare reply, shrinking under his fathers stare as he moved off swiftly towards the sullys marui pod, fighting back that sinking feeling in his stomach that felt like it would corrode him from the inside out. Aonung approached their home, the pelting rain felt hot against his skin. He paused at the entrance of their home, pulse quickening as his hands trembled by his sides, peering his head around the side, still unsure of himself as his gaze drifted over the space.
Toruk Makto and his wife sat together, talking in hushed voices as they kept their hands busy. The man was bent over a long wooden spear, carving carefully along the rough looking handle while Netytiri was crouched beside a large pile of mangrove leaves, folding them together and working through the task with ease.
He studied them for a moment before he noticed Kiri and Lo'ak sitting together against a stretched blue hide, she was swatting at him, chiding the boy while Tuk sat in her lap, begging Lo'ak to tell her what happened while she pulled at his arm. It was clear he was starting to get annoyed by the way his brows would twitch and the subtle roll of his eyes as they berated him. Aonung might laugh and tease him if it wasn't for the current circumstances. His eyes continued to search the room but he could not find the familiar set of amber eyes he was looking for, Neteyam was not here. Aonungs heart jumped into his throat, clenching his fists white, the steady rain suddenly felt like ice against his skin, he could feel nothing but a blinding sense of dread as he waited to confront the family, their eldest son missing. The Metkayinan Rapt at the wall with his fist, drawing the family's attention. It felt like his body would melt under their stares, Lo'aks sisters looked furious, their eyes narrowed to slits.
