"We're kind of in the middle of nowhere with a super-secret organization trying to find us, so if you could be a little quieter that would be great," I said, rolling my eyes but grinning in spite of myself.
"Aw come on, we're allowed to have a little fun while we're terrified for our lives, right?"
"Okay, but if we die it's your fault," I said jokingly.
"Sure. I still can't believe-" Caden stopped mid sentence, breath catching in his throat.
If he had heard the same rustling bushes, it was all over.
My blood pounded in my ears and adrenaline rushed through my veins, surging through me like a tsunami. Everything around me came into sharp focus as white hot rage made my face burn and my fingers shake. In the heat of the moment, I started to talk.
"We can hear you. Come out now."
There was a long pause. Every breath felt quick yet heavy, like it might be the last one I would take.
It might've been, for all I knew, because dots flashed in the corners of my vision as I blacked out.
