Hi, it’s me, Sarah Stevens. I’m an eleventh grade student in Texas High School. I have been brought up in an orphanage in South Campton, England. When I was a tiny baby, a stranger found me in a bag in the street, and as he was a poor guy, and wouldn’t afford it to bring up a kid, he gave me to the police, who brought me to the orphanage. I had no identity, they couldn’t know who my real parents are, but they found a tiny locket wrapped around my neck with two “s”s digged in it, so they called me Sarah Steven. I always knew I was not British, as I looked so different from the native British. I have dark hair, with middle eastern features. I had a tough time in my childhood, as my headmaster was so strict, she would make us clean the halls in all of our free time, and having fun was a forbidden, but there were two factors that made my life a brighter place. The first one was Kova, my best friend. She’s a black girl from African origins. She’s two years older than me, which makes her feels through her whole life that she’s responsible for me being good and successful. She helped me through my whole life, since I was a toddler up till now. The second best thing in my whole life is Kully. We met long ago on a rainy day when he was still a little puppy. I felt pity for him, so I took him to my room and gave him some food, but a storm went out when Mrs. Walker (for that was the name of the headmaster) knew about it, I got punished and Kully was kicked out. But since then, he stayed outside my bedroom’s window, we played with him through the window and gave him food. Me and Kova have been working since I was ten, as we wanted to save some money for a better future, we worked as shopkeepers, waitresses, hairdressers, and even gardeners. All of this gave us lots of experiences and life lessons, but at the end we reached our goal. Now me, Kova and Kully leaved England, we went to Texas, U.S.A, as Kova got accepted in Faculty of Engineering, in Texas University. So we all moved to the States. We now live in a small rented apartment near Kova’s University, and I joined Texas High School as I told you before. Everything was going fine, and I thought that my life would be no special than any girl’s, but I guess I was wrong …
Chapter One .
“Saraaah! Wake up! You’re going to be late for your bus, girl!” said Kova enthusiastically as it was first-day-school after the spring break.
I looked at the watch, it’s 7:50! “crap!” I told myself, as I had only ten minutes to get dressed, as my school bus arrives at 8 !
I jumped out of my bed, got dressed, and was about to pick up my hairbrush, when I heard the sound of the scaring vehicle, yes my school bus arrived! I put my hair in a pony tail, it sucked, but I had no other option.
“Sorry, I’m late I know” I said apologizingly while climbing the bus’ stairs.
“I’m not going to – “ he was about to argue when I interrupted him saying “ OK, I won’t be late again I promise”
I found only one seat available, it was beside Micheal Jorks, that *cool* dude who dances tectonic and wears loose shirts.
“For God’s sake !! not on the first day !” I thought to myself.
I tried to be nice and it seems it worked, as I got him chatting for some minutes, then when all the news were told, we both put on our headphones, and each one got in his own world.
When school was over, I went to the mall to do some shopping before going home. When I was done and was about to leave, my phone rang, it was Kova.
“Hey, sis” I greeted.
“Hey Sarah, how’s everything ?”
“Everything is great, what’s up?”
“I’ve been thinking about having dinner at any restaurant today. I’m bored of homemade dishes” She Suggested.
“Fine, I’m at the mall already, why don’t you come ? there are a couple of good place in here !” I said
“Ok perfect. I’ll meet you there in 30 minutes !” she said happily.
After 30 minutes, Kova was there. She’s always been on time. We chose a place to eat and each on talked about her day.
“Oh I was about to forget to tell you about the conference the university is having next week!” said Kova, while being busy cutting her steak neatly.
“What conference?” I asked eagerly, as I know that kind of statement. It’s always followed by a request.
“European Social Science History Conference, it’s an international conference which is held annually in any region of the world. This year Texas university will be the host” said my sister, and she seemed so excited.
“Hmmm .. and why are you that excited ? I mean you’re in faculty of engineering, it has nothing to do with history” I said, trying to know her purpose.
“It’s a very interesting subject girl ! So I’ve been thinking this way, the university has been calling for volunteering students, to help guests find the halls, and guide them to find their next sessions, school students are welcome to volunteer also, so we –“
As soon as I got what she means I objected “ Kova ! no no I’m not doing this, I’m bored of school already. No need for more educational stuff” I shouted.
“Shuuuuuuuush !! People are watching us !! it will be fun I promise, we’ll meet new people from different countries and –“
“Kova! Come on ! what’s “Fun” in this ?!” I exclaimed
“ok, I got an idea, we can go on Friday, if we like it, we’ll go the next days, if not then we tried !”
I found that logical “umm ok let’s try” and the compromise was made !!
To be continued.
