Third Person POV
The gentle breeze blew through their (H/C) hair. Hypnotized by the speckled lights in the sky, (Y/N) sat on the porch. Their index finger tapped the wooden impatiently and their (E/C) eyes darted across the dark sea above.

BOOM!

The sky's dark canvas erupted into a splash of bright colours and sparks. The sound of people cheering from the town could even be heard from (Y/N)'s isolated shack in the woods.

A smile graced their features and their eyes widened in awe. (Y/N) loved fireworks. The bright colours and the odd shapes they made in the sky brought her mind at ease where it didn't for others.

(Y/N) POV
For a couple of hours, I sat there watching the sparks in the sky before the screams of joy began to die down and the fireworks were no more.

There had once been a time where I would have seen the fireworks whilst sitting in my mother's lap and shouting for my father to look.

But that time was no more.

As I retreated back into my house, I took a quick glance at the two graves by the willow tree. I tore my eyes away from them quickly and shut the door behind me.

Third Person POV
"Anuie, look."

The man with a purple and black nagagi kimono opened his six eyes and stared at his brother, "What?" Kokushibou droned.

Another man with a red haori and yellow nagagi kimono pointed at the colours above their heads, "Do you not see it?" Yoriichi asked.

"I see it." The older demon stated, closing his golden and crimson eyes again, "I simply... do not care for it."

Yoriichi didn't flinch at the tone of sarcasm he detected, and only gazed up at the bright lights whilst covering his pointed ears, "It's beautiful..." he murmered.

Sitting cross-legged atop the large rock, Kokushibou hummed in agreement.

Perhaps during a different time when he was younger, he could have admired the fireworks for their true beauty.

But that time was no more.

Once the fireworks had ceased, Yoriichi turned to his brother, "We should get moving, Anuie. The sun will rise soon."

Kokushibou hopped down from the rock to Yoriichi's side. The brothers made their way deeper into the woods where the light would never hope to reach them.

~Breath of Time~
/Second Form, Timeskip/

The sunlight shone onto the undersized, dull house. It was easier to see now the trees that surrounded it - with slashes in their sides.

(Y/N) emerged from the house, dark circles under their eyes. With a lousy fist, they rubbed the exhaustion away and clenched the bucket in their free hand a little tighter.

(Y/N) POV
There was only one source of water close enough for me to walk to regularly, and that was the river further into the forest.

It wasn't far at all. The water wasn't polluted and there were many fish. The only problem was that it was surrounded by the darkest part of the forest.

No sunlight could ever hope to reach it.

And naturally, where there's no sunlight, there's demons to be found.

As a child, I was always told to never go to river on my own. Especially in the daytime.

I wondered why the daytime. Surely the most dangerous time was the night?

Because it was the perfect spot for demons to retreat to during the day. That's why there would be more of them there.

But now I was living all alone. So I had no choice but to go if I didn't want to die of thirst.

With my katana by my side, I strode with confidence into the forest.

At first, I'd been scared for life every time I made the perilous journey. But now, I wasn't afraid.

What could a Demon Slayer have to fear of low-level demons?

Third Person POV
The scent of human flesh caught Yoriichi's nose. His ears perked up and he poked his brother's shoulder, "Anuie, anuie!" I hissed, "Wake up."

The veins on Kokushibou's forehead became more prominent and he opened his middle pair of eyes, "What now, Yoriichi?" He whispered back, livid with fatigue.

"Do you smell that?"

Kokushibou, now awake and alert, focused of what his nose tried to reiterate and sat up straight, "A human? Here?"

Yoriichi nodded. The two demons followed the scent and skulked through the trees until their eyes became set upon a person with a katana.

"A Demon Slayer." Kokushibou acknowledged.

"They're quite beautiful..."

"Hmm..."

(Y/N) POV
Once I came to the river, I crouched on the bank and filled the bucket with water - careful not to catch the fish.

When I was satisfied, I stood up again and was about to make the journey back until...

THUD!

The water splashed onto the ground as the bucket fell and I took a defensive stance - sword in hand.

"Show yourselves." I demanded.

I was only met with silence for a moment or two before a deep, toneless voice resonated from the trees, "Who are you... to command us?"

"My name is (Y/N) (L/N). Demons are not welcome in these woods." I fired back.

"We mean you no harm." Another voice, somewhat silvery and monotonous, stated.

I decided to test my luck, "Prove it." I coaxed, gripping my sword tighter.

Third Person POV
The brothers were amused by the daring tone they heard in (Y/N)'s voice, though only slightly.

Faster than (Y/N) could blink, the two demons appeared in front of them. Their eyes widened a little in horror. Their stance began to falter as a shiver crept up their spine.

They tried their very best to seem unfazed, but the demons knew.

After all, fear had a very distinctive scent.

"Are you... satisfied?" Kokushibou inquired, narrowing his eyes slightly.

"Uh... we-well..." (Y/N) stuttered. They couldn't formulate the words to speak with their dry throat.

"There's no need to be afraid." Yoriichi reiterated, placing a hand on his chest.

(Y/N) tried to relax a little, but was unable to. They lowered their sword a little, "What are your names?"

"My name is Yoriichi. This is my brother Michika-"

"Kokushibou."

"Okay, uh..." (Y/N) scratched the back of their head, "It's nice to meet you both."

The two brothers spoke at the same time.

"Likewise."
