Zagreus knew he didn't have much time on the surface before he was taken by styx, but thanks to the boons he'd collected over the run he'd been holding up well as he talked to his mother about her coming back.
She seemed to be considering it, having had the time to talk and reconnect with her son.
It was nice seeing her, Zagreus really hoped she came back. But their sweet little meeting was suddenly interrupted by someone he wasn't expecting.
Ga-dong.
Thanatos.
"What the-" Zagreus muttered, turning to face the burst of light that the death god appeared from.
Before he could even ask what was going on, Thanatos grabbed his shoulders frantically.
"Zagreus you need to come back to the house, NOW" He said.
He'd never seen Than so... scared. Clearly something was wrong, and from what he knew about Hypnos he assumed it was related to that.
"Than- what's going on?" Zagreus asked.
Persephone recognised Thanatos, she'd met him as a godling. Although she was rather surprised to see him all grown up randomly showing up at her cottage looking for her son.
"It's Hypnos, you need to get back now" Thanatos said.
"What's happened to him?" Zagreus asked.
Than fell silent for a moment, he felt bad for telling Zagreus without his twins permission like they'd agreed on. But it was life or death at this point.
"He's... dying Zagreus... he caught Hanahaki" Thanatos said.
Zagreus felt his soul leave his body hearing that, what did he mean Hypnos was DYING? He's a god! Surely he'll just come back from styx right? But if it was Hanahaki...
"HANA- he... he has Hanahaki? For now long?" Zagreus asked.
"Weeks now, he didn't tell anyone aside from mother and your father because... I don't know. He was afraid I guess. But Zagreus he's practically got one foot in the grave and if you don't go to him..." Thanatos explained.
Suddenly it clicked in Zagreus' mind why he was needed so badly, and this wave of guilt washed over him.
"Me..? He's in love with me?" Zagreus asked.
"Yes, it's you Zagreus. If you don't return the feelings tell him now so we can rush him into surgery, he might still have a chance..." Thanatos said.
"No, no! I... I didn't think... I was under the impression all that flirting was more playful and jokey..."
"Do you love him Zagreus?"
Zagreus had no idea how to handle the emotions he was feeling right now. He felt guilty for now telling Hypnos about his feelings sooner, he felt scared that his love was so close to death and couldn't come back if he died, we felt confused that Hypnos hid it from him.
"I do... I didn't think he... I'm so stupid of course he returned the feelings, none of those comments were jokes! Idiot, Zagreus. You're an actual idiot" He scolded himself.
"Then you need to get back now, he's in your bed barely awake and has already coughed up entire flowers with the stems still attached. We don't have much time, you need to save my brother Zagreus!" Thanatos begged.
Zagreus turned to his mother, who stood there stunned hearing all of this drama out of nowhere from gods she hadn't seen in decades. He pulled her into a tight hug.
"I promise I'll be back as soon as this is over" he said.
"I understand son, go. Save him. Last I saw Hypnos he was only a godling and was just the sweetest baby. Don't let his light die" Persephone replied.
