chapter 1

I glare at my empty dorm. This wasn't supposed to happen, I wasn't supposed to quit college halfway through the semester to go home, my mom wasn't supposed to be in a coma and my brother shouldn't have been left alone during all this.

I get up from my barren bed frame and tear my eyes away from the room and glance out the foggy window.

It's raining.

I sigh, grabbing my bags and heading to the nearest train station to get back to my home.

Sitting on the train all I can think about is how my brother must feel. Having to take care of himself and run the household all alone. He shouldn't have to go through this at such a young age.

I must admit when I got the call from him a week ago saying our mother was asleep and wouldn't wake up I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to finish the semester or go straight home. But the thought of leaving my brother by himself made me decide to continue to do college online from home so I could look after him.

I sink into my seat a little, dreading having to see my mother in her state. It was a 45-minute ride to get to my destination, my hometown.

The train finally reaches my stop and I leave the train station. As the rain hits my umbrella I take in my surroundings. Nothing's changed but I guess I have only been gone a few months.

I look down at my wet sneakers feeling the water soak into my socks. The unpleasant feeling adding to my shitty mood. At least I'll be home soon.

I see the large house in front of me and suck in a sharp breathe. I'm about to see Cardamon for the first time in months. I hope he doesn't resent me for not being there.

To my right I see a small lady with poofy brown hair give me a strange look. Realizing I'm stalling I lift my hand and knock on the door.

I hold my breathe as I hear light foot steps coming towards the door. Cardamom.

The door opens and I look down to see a head of purple hair, the same shade as mine, staring back at me.

"Hey Cardamon." I say in a quiet voice.
He stares at me and I can see shiny see-through tears well up in his eyes.

He suddenly launches himself at me and I put my arms around him

"I missed you." He says shoving his face into my neck.

He stays like this for a few more minutes before letting go and grabbing one of my bags. "Come, let's go inside." He whispers.

We walk in silence straight to my room to put my things down. Cardamon grabs my sleeve to catch my attention.

"She's in her room, I know you want to see her." He says. "Ok, I'll go see her now." I sigh "I'll be back soon."

I walk off, straight to our mother's room. The first thing I see is her bright purple hair. I walk closer, I've never seen her this still before.

"Hi mom." I hold back tears thinking about the last time I saw her. I stare at her emotionless face for a few more moments before deciding I can't take it and leave the room shutting the door quickly behind me.

I feel something brush against my leg as I walk to find Cardamon. I realize it's my cat, Skittles, that I left behind while I was at college.

I bend down to pick him up. "Hey boy." I say as I scratch behind his ears and he lets out a soft purr.

I continue to walk towards the lounge where Cardamon resides.

I take a seat next to him on the plush couch. He has two mugs in his hands, he passes one to me. "Here, I made it just the way you like it."

I ruffle his hair as I grab the warm purple mug and sit next to him "Thanks." I smile slightly.

Cardamon silently cuddles up against me as I pull a blanket over us. He closes his eyes and lets out a sigh. "I'm so glad your back."

I lean closer to him as I close my eyes as well. "Yea, me too"

We both sit in silence as we drift off to sleep. Our mugs of tea forgotten.
