I could barely move. I was too shocked. Jake sat there, crying. Neither of us said anything.

We heard footsteps. I turned around. Firemen, 3 of them, staring at me from the staircase. "WE GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE!" One of them screamed.

I looked back at Jake, barley managing a sentence. "Jake... come on man."

He slowly stood up, wiping the tears away. He walked towards me, coughing. The smoke was heavy. I could see the pain in his face. I knew it from experience. I felt the same way when my mom died. I grabbed him and ran to the firemen. They picked us up and ran back down the stairs. I heard something crash down behind us.

We got out of the house. Jake crashed down to the grass, turning around. Cops rushed toward us, grabbing both of us and getting us further from the house. Jake struggled to no success. They propped us down on the sidewalk, wrapping blankets around us. "You two stay put, you hear me?"

So we sat there, silent. There were no words to be shared between us. I wrapped my arm around him, trying to comfort him. I could still hear his sobs.

"Who... was he?" He asked after he finished crying.

"I don't know. Not yet. But we're gonna find out." And I meant it.

That bastard was dead.
