"And the champion returns," Lucan said with a smile, "dueling alone?"
Joining the Crossed Wands was fun, and dueling came easy to you. Your only true opponent was Sebastian Sallow. He was a slippery thing, and Slytherin really did suit him.
It was shortly after classes ended, and waiting was unavoidable. You wandered around just outside the dark clock tower, watching as people zoomed past on their brooms. This was the best time of day, just after the last class and just before dinner.
"Well, if it isn't the little finch," Sebastian said, approaching you, his robes swooshing around him.
"It's an eagle, and you know it."
Sebastian scoffed, waving you off.
"Let's get this over with so I can duel with real talent." You walked right past him; you knew he'd be the only opponent willing to duel with you today. Most of the others were scared of you. You have been the champion since your fifth year. Sebastian trailed right behind you, his presence feeling like that of a pesky little mosquito.
"Of course, it's you two," Lucan said nothing more before stepping back and folding his arms across his chest. You stood in your stance, in your unassigned but yet assigned corner. Sebastian always took the south, and you always took the north; it was the only thing you two ever agreed on.
"You think you can handle me today?" He had a smug smile.
"Shut up, Sallow," you said as you cast the first spell, sending Sebastian stumbling in surprise. You cast more spells, barely giving Sebastian the chance to cast any back. Then, finally, he casts one.
"Leviosa," you felt your body being lifted; you couldn't escape. You knew what was coming. Flash after flash as he hit you with simple blasts and then you were thrown back, smacking into the boxes and barrels in the corner.
"Fuck," you yelled, clutching your arms; a long, broken piece of wood had slashed your arm open. "Time!" you yelled, all eyes on you, wide and concerned.
You cradled your arm in your other hand, and your robes were cut too. You stayed sitting there, applying pressure to the wound, your robes becoming blood-soaked.
"Couldn't handle-oh," Sebastian said, walking toward you. His words trailed off as he saw your current hunched state.
"I think that's enough for today; the Crossed Wands meeting is over for today," Lucan called out, and people began leaving, filing out the many exits, Lucan included, he knew you could handle your own.
"Are you bleeding?" Sebastian was towering over you; his growth spurt in year 6 really did a number. "Just go away." Your pride wasn't hurt, and you didn't care, but your arm hurt a lot, and you'd have to figure out how to lie to the infirmary nurse now.
"Let me—" He reached for your arm with a gentle hand, and you smacked it away.
"Don't act like you care," you glared at him, his knees bending to reach your level with ease.
"You're my only worthy opponent; of course, I care," he said, and he reached out again; you let him this time. He examined it, holding it close to his face. He held up his wand and quickly mended your robes.
"I guess I need to learn how strong I am," he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Come on, I'll join you in the infirmary," he said, holding out his hand and pulling you to your feet.
"What's our cause?" You inquired, pressing your robed hand against the wound and wincing at the stinging pain.
"Don't worry; I have my ways; just follow my lead," Sebastian held open the door for you, leading the way to the infirmary. He was, once again, the slipperiest person imaginable; he could get away with casting the unforgivables.
