Aragorn watched as Legolas; his dearest friend gently tucked the Ring beneath his undershirt. Seeing the Elf's eyes darken almost immediately, Aragorn turned away feeling as though he were torn in two. Aragorn had saved Legolas' life, times beyond count, and Legolas his. Now he was giving his life for the entirety of Middle-Earth.
"Let us honour Frodo, though we must be swift, orcs cannot be far off" the Elf's formerly merry voice rang through the clearing. Sam, Merry and Pippin lifted Frodo's body and gently lowered it into a grave they must have dug earlier. Weeping, they carefully tossed dirt onto their still friend and when they had finished, they sat back on their haunches and cried some more, until Legolas roused them, hearing orcs no less than a league away. The Hobbits hurriedly stood, still wiping their eyes and sniffling noses, and allowed themselves to be ushered away.
Not long after they had left the clearing, Aragorn's ears detected the sound of orcs crashing through the bush, "Quickly!" he whispered, urging the Hobbits into a run. Arrows whistled past the running Fellowship. Grabbing the nearest Hobbit to him, and motioning for Boromir and Legolas to do the same, Aragorn picked up his pace, they needed to make it back to the river before the orcs could reach them.
Aragorn saw the glimmer of water through the trees. Fighting his way through the last of the undergrowth, he jumped into the nearest boat to him, dropped his Hobbit and splashed back to the shore, hurriedly grabbing their equipment. As he saw Legolas and Boromir crashing through the bushes before sprinting over the rocky shore, he motioned for them each to take their own boat. Jumping back into his boat he started paddling through away from the shore right as the orcs became visible through the forest. As they headed down the swiftly flowing river, Aragorn glanced over at Legolas, he seemed deflated already, his blue eyes now dark pits and the cheerful smile that had once graced his face was long gone. Aragorn sorely regretted that his oldest friend had been tasked with bearing the very Ring that had brought his ancestor, Isildur to his doom. Aragorn had not only failed in protecting Frodo, but he had failed his friend.
