When Jesse woke up, he was no longer laying on the ground but in someone's bed. "Was that a nightmare," Jesse asked himself. Jesse tried to raise himself up and a sharp pain shot right through his stomach, "OW SON OF A CROSSBOW THAT HURTS" "Oh good your finally awake. How are you feeling Jesse," a voice came from beside him. Jesse looked to his side, and there sat Headmaster Fanguard. "Fanguard? What am I doing here... and where is my father... or my mother... or anyone," Jesse asked laying back down. "You're the uh... you're the only one left," Fanguard said. "So it wasn't a dream... someone really did...," Jesse stopped. "I'm sorry Jesse... you're the only one who I found still partly alive. So I brought you back here to rest up," Fanguard said putting a hand on Jesse's shoulder. "How... how long have I been out," Jesse asked. "For about a week now, but don't worry the pain in your chest should go away in a little bit. If you would have woken up two days before you wouldn't be able to move," Fanguard explained. "A week huh? Ok... well could you bring me some water... I'm thirsty. "Of course," Fanguard said patting Jesse's shoulder.
Jesse just laid in bed wondering what he was going to do for a week before he went back to school. He wasn't going back home that's for sure. Fanguard came back with the water and handed it to Jesse. Jesse grabbed the cup, thanked him, and began drinking it. "So Jesse I've been thinking... I know you don't like fighting...," Fanguard began saying. Jesse cut him off, "I know... now that my family is..." Jesse paused for a sec trying to hold back the lump in his throat, "I need to learn how to protect myself... because now I can't rely on someone to always be there for me... I need to learn." Jesse looked up at Fanguard's eyes, "Alright let's do this... I'm ready to learn how to fight." "Well we will start later this afternoon... you need to stretch your legs a bit," Fanguard said helping Jesse up, "Also since we don't know why your clan was targeted... it might be a good idea to change your identity a bit, don't you think?" Jesse nodded in agreement. "Well then follow me," Fanguard said smiling.
Jesse followed Fanguard into a giant room full of costumes and clothes. "Woah this place is huge! And I can chose whatever I want?" Jesse asked with excitement. "Yeah go ahead knock yourself out kid," Fanguard said laughing. Jesse looked around, and saw a jacket. It was black with green on the inside of the collar and down the arms. Jesse grabbed it and put it on. It blended nicely with his black tee. Next he found a pair of fingerless gloves. "These might be helpful in combat..." Jesse paused, "I still can't believe they're gone... maybe if I had learned how to fight sooner... maybe... just maybe..." Jesse began to cry and fell to his knees. After a minute, Jesse felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Fanguard, he didn't say anything, he just sat there letting Jesse cry in his arms, and patting his back. After a few minutes when Jesse began to calm down, Fanguard asked, "Jesse we don't have to start your training today... why don't you take sometime to process what happened and grieve?" Jesse stood up, "No let's train... I want to learn how to stop something like that from happening again." Fanguard nodded, "Ok, go finish your outfit then." Jesse began looking around again. He found some pants that were flexible, yet looked durable. Next he worked on his hair. He found some Black dye, and soon he looked almost completely different.
Jesse came out of the room to find Fanguard waiting for him. "Oh I like the look... and I have something to complete it," Fanguard said giving him a mask, "This was your mom's. She wore this when she fought back in the war for peace. And since you were closest to her... I thought you'd like to have this." Jesse put the mask on with tears in his eyes, "Thank you... I'll wear this proudly in her name." Fanguard smiled. "Even though my identity is a secret... can I go see Lux? Let her know I'm alive?" Jesse asked. "That's probably not a good idea... it's probably better if less people knew you were alive... to protect them so to say," Fanguard replied, "But I can teach you stealth tactics so you can go see how's she's doing once in awhile. Plus I see her in school all the time, so I can also let you know." Jesse was disappointed but understood and agreed to his idea.
