I woke up in a hospital bed, an iv machine by my side.
I looked around but no one was in my room, I didn't want to move, I was sore.
"Miss Reyes, you're awake." A doctor walked in.
"What happened?" I asked, not properly remembering.
"You had a lot of alcohol in your system and bruises on your stomach when you arrived here, your friend, Rachel called us." He explained.
"What about my baby?" I sat up.
"Im so sorry miss but when we ran some tests, there was no sign of your baby" His tone was sympathetic.
I started sobbing, bringing my hands to my face to wipe my tears but more ran down. I can't believe I'd done this to my own child.
I couldn't even blame Joseph, sure he was the one that put me in that state but I was the one that chose to drink and I guess that's what did it.
"I'm very sorry." The doctor walked out of the room and Rachel quickly walked in, putting her arms around me and letting me sob into her.
"It's okay." She held me tight.
"It's my fault." My lip quivered as I spoke between cries.
"Don't worry, it going to be okay." She knew all I needed was someone with me, so she stayed by my side until visiting hours ended.
I was now alone in my hospital room, the beeping from my own heart monitor was the only noise I could here, I was zoned out just thinking about my poor baby.
I'm aware it wasn't even a proper baby yet but I was still blaming myself.
"Hey." A voice startled me.
Mateo.
"Hi." I looked up at him. "How are you here? Visiting hours ended."
"I have my ways." He smiled slightly and sat down next to my bed where Rachel left the chair.
"Why'd you come here?" I asked, not wanting to be rude.
"I heard what happened." His smile faded as he looked at me.
"How?"
"I have a friend who works here and he notified me that you were brought in, drunk and beaten."
"Joseph came over." I sniffled. "He was drunk, grabbed me by the neck, I could barley breathe. He said I couldn't raise this baby by myself and that I wasn't fit to be a mother. He punched my stomach so many times. He showed me my scars and called me a little girl." I broke down.
"That asshole!" Mateo shouted.
"I- I know." I wiped my tears.
"It's going to be okay." Mateo placed his hand on mine for a second, removing it after he realised what he was doing.
"I'm not going to have a baby anymore." I sat up.
"Are they 100% sure?" He asked.
"They said they ran tests and stuff so I guess so." I held back tears that were threatening to come out.
"Shit." He muttered.
I laid back down, not knowing what to do with myself.
"I'm gonna stay here tonight." Mateo put his hand on mine again but didn't remove it this time. "I'm going to help you through this."
I was shocked, he seemed to be a cold person on the outside but I guess not.
"You don't have to."
"I'm going to." His voice was stern.
