While Dejanae is engaging in conversation with her partner, Kash, at the far end of the gym, I struggle to complete the nine remaining plate sit-ups that Bryan had assigned to me.
I fall onto my back and lift the plate over my head with a grunt of exertion then stretch my arm outwards and push the weight upwards, feeling my muscles tense and burn with effort.
Ignoring the discomfort, I remain focus on finishing the exercise, repeating the movement until I complete the required number of repetitions.
With a sense of satisfaction, I place the plate back on the floor and sat upright, catching my breath.
"Yaa get better mon. Love dat. Ago make yuh take a 5 then we ready again." Bryan stated, effortlessly lifting the plate and placing it back on the weight rack.
I hiss my teeth in frustration, feeling completely drained from the intense workout, "Pass dah water bottle deh fimmie and the bag when yaa come back," I told him, pointing towards my bag near the wall.
He follow my gaze and quickly made his way over to my bag and retrieve it, bringing it over to me.
I gratefully smile at him and thank him, popping the cap of the bottle and taking a refreshing gulp of water, feeling its coolness flow down my throat.
Afterward, I place the water bottle on the floor and rummage through my bag to locate my phone, until my fingers close around it.
I then take it out and press the power button to check the time, the bright screen illuminating my face.
