At the Hanshi, Lan XiChen greeted Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian with tea.
"WuXian, have you seen the Healers yet today?" began Lan XiChen once the tea had been served.
"Yes, XiChen-Ge. Lan Zhan had me there first thing this morning. I've been given orders to eat, rest and exercise... no surprise coming from Lan Healers." Wei WuXian turned to Lan WangJi. "I think I remember specific Rules about these very things, don't I?" he asked.
"Mn," answered Lan WangJi. "There is a complete section in the Rules about caring for one's health. One is to retire at 9:00 PM. One is to rise at 5:00 AM. No more than three bowls of rice at one meal. Do not overindulge. Limit extreme spice and sweetness..."
Wei WuXian waved his hands in front of Lan WangJi's face. "Stop! Stop! Don't go through them all now or we'll never get to anything else today!" He smiled at his husband. "I was sure you had Rules, my love... I just can't quite remember each one perfectly any more."
"Wei Ying should perhaps memorize them again," suggested Lan WangJi, a wicked little glint in his eyes.
Wei WuXian squawked. "What? Memorizing them once wasn't enough? I can't be blamed for my bad memory – it's travelled through too many bodies and been left in tatters – not my fault! Plus, I believe you had an additional thousand Rules added after I was a student here. Memorizing 4,000 Rules is a punishment, I tell you! Here I've just helped your uncle and you want to punish me again?"
Fond smiles were exchanged as memories of punishments given and overseen were silently recalled, along with the days of innocence and fresh beginnings.
"And how do you feel today, WuXian?" asked Lan XiChen, breaking the moment. "Did the Healers find an explanation for how your body was changed? Or did you remember something that might shed some light on this... remarkable event?"
Wei WuXian shook his head. "I really don't know, XiChen-Ge, and the Healers seem just as perplexed as I am. I only started to realize the truth of it when I was getting dressed this morning and nothing fit. You should have seen my robes – limbs hanging out in a most unseemly fashion with arms and legs bare to the day... it was a terrible sight!" He waved a hand over his unaccustomed white garb. "I had to borrow your brother's robes – my own were indecent!"
Lan XiChen gave a small laugh. "Indeed. You're as tall as WangJi now."
"Not quite," huffed Lan WangJi.
Wei WuXian and Lan XiChen exchanged amused looks.
"Did the Healers suggest how or why your body altered?" asked Lan XiChen.
Wei WuXian shook his head.
"I don't think they've ever seen anything like this before. When the Soul Summoning was used to bring me into Mo XuanYu's body it was a first for everyone. That's a type of magic that is rarely even heard of and still fewer would know how to attempt. I'm the first person the Healers had seen where it was clearly successful. As to why Mo XuanYu's body would reform to be like my own, or even how it could do so... no one knows."
"In this changed body... the Yin Iron. How is that affecting you? Can it be managed?" asked Lan XiChen.
Wei WuXian considered and turned serious eyes on the two brothers. He brushed his index finger on his nose and settled a little more comfortably – and therefore messily – into his seat as he considered.
"I... yes, I think I can manage this for some time," Wei WuXian mused aloud. "The Yin Iron is more of an annoyance right now. It's not exactly uncomfortable – more like a chronic ache than an acute injury. I can't ignore it, but it's not so much that I can't set it aside in my thoughts and get things done. The resentful energy it's pulling in isn't pleasant, but I'm used to it, at least, and I can make a point of releasing it regularly, so I think it won't be too bad. Lan Zhan will be of enormous help to keep my Qi in balance; he has a lot of Yang energy to share..." Wei WuXian broke off, eyes going round and face colouring as he realized he may have given a bit too much information. There was only one way that Lan WangJi was able to gift Yang energy to Wei WuXian and bleed off a little Yin energy in return. Although his face remained impassive, Lan WangJi's ears had pinked noticeably, and a warm flush was spreading across Lan XiChen's pale complexion.
