'Ouch' is the first thought that runs through your mind as you wake up, the sun burning your eyes as you open them. You are laying in a clearing surrounded by trees and overgrown grass. "Where am I?" you mutter aloud as you stand up and brush the dirt off your pants, "Why was I laying on the ground?" You start exploring ‘cause like why not? While you're weaving through the trees you think to yourself, 'What am I doing here?' And as you begin searching your mind you stop in your tracks and your mind begins racing. You can't seem to remember who you are. And, as a matter of fact, you can't seem to remember anything at all.
You sprint back to where you woke up and after some frantic searching you find a dirty old brown backpack. Inside is a water bottle, some bread wrapped in a cloth, a jacket, a compass, a small knife, some book on plants and what nots, and a leather-bound journal. Engraved on the front in big letters is 'Property of Y/N L/N.' Y/N huh? That's a nice name. You decide to quickly check over yourself. You are wearing hiking boots, long black socks, jean overalls, and a long-sleeved black sweatshirt. Your pockets are empty except for a single pen. 'Welp….' you think to yourself. Safe to say you have no idea what to do. Flipping through the journal you find that several of the pages have been torn out and the rest are blank.
You begin questioning what to do when your stomach makes a surprise appearance and grumbles so loudly it makes you laugh. You take out the bread and tear some off. Something quickly becomes apparent though, you seem to be in the middle of nowhere with nothing to eat but a loaf of bread- that won't last you long. You fish out that other book you found in the bag, "Plants' yes's and no's: How to Survive in the Wild'' by Alyssa. Skimming through the table of context you find that the book includes things such as poisonous plants and berries, edible plants and berries, poison oak/ivy, and how to identify these kinds of things and what to do if you eat or touch the wrong thing. It's honestly quite informative.
After deciding on a plan, which was to go and forage for some things to eat and try and find a water source, you set off on your trek through the woods.
----------------------------------
Much time passes before you finally reach a water source. Based on your compass you've just been heading northeast for a couple of hours. You likely first woke up around mid-late morning and it's now late afternoon. While making your way here you found quite a bit of supplies such as some edible red berries and some medicinal herbs. It's really good timing since you just ran out of water maybe 20 minutes ago. The woods were surprisingly quite peaceful. The only other living creatures you'd seen save for insects were a few squirrels and some deer off in the distance.
The said source of water you found was a stream. According to your book following a river downstream was the best option because settlements are usually at lakes or around rivers so following it will likely lead to people. After refilling your water you decided to head back a bit to where you saw a shallow cave where you could sleep tonight.
It took a bit of time but you began work on a make-shift mattress of sorts. By gathering loads of reeds and long pieces of grass you were able to tie them together and create a sort of cushiony underbed (the book had a short tutorial but you couldn't help but feel like you'd done this before.) Unfortunately, this used up what little daylight you had left. After taking a swig of water and putting on the jacket you had, you lay down on your side and try to fall asleep.
However, no matter how much time passes you just can't seem to. You pick up your stuff and move outside to the stream and put your stuff down maybe 10 feet away. You lay down again, this time on your back, and move your hands to put your arms under your head so you can look up at the stars more comfortably. As you do that, you feel a bug on your neck and swat at it once or twice and suddenly a giant pop-up-like thing appears in front of you even though you're laying down. Shrieking and exclaiming some colorful words you sit up and promptly scoot away only for it to stay the same distance away.
You finally calm yourself down and have a drink of water. You start analyzing the pop-up and see a question mark in the top right-hand corner which of course you press. It opens to reveal a sort of help menu that vaguely explains what this all is. It's called an Inventory and it is a sort of storage feature for people. You can store around 18 "stacks" of items though there are rules to specific items such as tools and clothes cannot stack and instead take up a full slot. Things also have a quantity limit which varies based on the weight and space they take up. And bags cannot be put in your inventory, regardless of if they're empty or not.
Using this also prevents others from stealing your things while you sleep. You decide to test it out with a clump of grass you pull out of the ground next to you. You simply hold one hand on the item you wish to put in and double-tap on the item slot. A pop-up appears and disappears just fast enough to read it in the top corner. Successful <Ryegrass> added to Inventory And then you test it further by double tapping and holding down on the slot which holds the grass then dragging the stack from the slot to the top bar of the menu where it appears on the ground with a fading low glow. 'Huh, that's pretty cool and convenient you think to yourself smiling. You play with it a bit more before sleep finally fills your eyes and you lay down and fall asleep so fast one may assume you passed out
(A/N: I'm so proud of myself for finally writing this as I've been wanting to write this for over a year and I've finally started again. I've played around with a lot of ideas but I think I've finally decided on one. Also for the record, the reader is about 12 at the start of this- there is no specified age to make it more insertive but you can assume they're around the same age as Tommy)
