thomas sits on a bench overlooking the park. he sighs. and thinks, and wishes, then sighs some more. he is so busy feeling sorry for himself that he almost doesn't notice the dark shadow of a girl settle over the dappled light at his feet. almost.

"that's my bench, you know."

thomas ignores her, annoyed that she had interrupted his pity party of one.

"um, hello? when people talk to you, you're usually expected to reply."

"you're blocking the light."

"he speaks!"

the girl sits down next to thomas, and he shifts uncomfortably.

"better?" she asks.

"i 'spose."

a beat of silence.

"i love coming up here. it's so quiet... and peaceful... this is a great place for people watching, you know... you can see the whole park and-"

"could you please stop talking?"

the girl shrinks back.

"uh... i- i'm sorry."

thomas picks up his bag and stands up, a stony expression on his face.

"don't worry about it." he says dismissively.

the girl watches his retreating back with a mixture of confusion and amusement.

"what's up his butt?"

she giggles before reaching into her pocket to retrieve a purple packet of gum.
