__________
Langa feels his eyes getting heavy as the wind and snow whip across his windshield wipers
He can feel the many hours of traveling starting to weigh on him. He musters all his energy to keep his eyes on the quiet, dark. He glances to his right to see a sign whizzing by that he believes says, "Kusatsu, 2 miles ahead".
As "The light that never goes out" by The Smiths plays softly in the background, the pads of Langa's fingers tap against the cold leather of his steering wheel. His eyes start to droop when a blinding light shocks his eyes awake slowly. Before his eyes can fully adjust, he swerves to the right side of the road directly into the blinding white snow.
"What the-" He groans. He's definitely awake now. Langa glances to his left where the blinding light was previously, now a car pulling up next to him. His eyes finally adjust to see a black and white SUV with a police symbol on the side. The car's window rolls down to show a man dressed in a sleek hat and jacket with a shiny gold badge on his left side.
Langa rolls his icy cold window down in response, the wind and snowflakes whipping through his hair. "Sir, the road has been closed up ahead due to the state of the storm. You can either head back the way you came, or there is a recreational center not too far from here that we set up for people to wait out the storm. I highly recommend you let me direct you to the center." His voice was monotone and cold.
Langa paused; how was he going to get to his mother's house? Going back the way he came wouldn't do him any good; he just wanted to rest in the comfort of his mom's house. "I'll go to the center. Thank you very much, sir." The policeman gave him a slight nod of recognition and rolled his window up. Langa rolled up his window and sighed as he followed the red taillights. At least he could rest for a couple of hours before returning to the road again.
__________
He pulls into a dark parking lot next to the SUV. "Be safe, sir; someone should be by to update you on the road closures." Says the cop before pulling out of the parking stall and off into the distance.Langa takes a second to collect himself before entering the cold snow. He sees only two cars in the parking lot, a gray minivan and a blue sedan covered in snow. He takes a second to grab his keys from the ignition and his wallet. Langa takes a deep breath. "Here we go," He mumbles to himself before throwing the door open and trudging through the strong winds.
Langa grabs the ice-cold metal handle of the door and pushes it open; a gust of warm air hits his face. He steps in and takes in his surroundings, multiple tables in the middle of a plain room filled with cheesy Christmas decorations. An older couple sits at a round table, murmuring with each other with soft smiles.
A few tables to the right, there is a younger girl that looks about his age. Maybe slightly older, sitting silently on her phone. She barely glances at him before returning to the screen in her hands.
Then finally, in the very right corner of the room, a boy with the most brightly colored hair locks eyes with him. His eyes are as warm as his hair, and he gives him a soft smile. Langa feels his breath hitch, and he has never felt so affected by a person's smile.
"Hey, sweetie, would you like to sit with us?" Says the older woman, smiling softly at him. "Oh, sure. I just have- I have to call my mom real quick, one second." Langa excuses himself and walks around the corner on the opposite side of the room down a small hallway leading to the restrooms.
