Langa wakes up to what seems like pots banging together.
He rubs his eyes and stretches his arms over his head. Langa threw the blanket off, stood up, and ran his hands through his hair. He yawned as he changed his clothes and walked out of his room and to the kitchen. As he stepped into the space, he saw Reki crunched over on the floor, part of his head shoved into the cupboard.
"Reki?" Langa questioned, leaning his hand on the counter. Reki jumped up and hit his head on the door of the cabinet. "Ow! What the fuck?!" Reki exclaimed, rubbing the spot on his head. Langa giggled, covering his mouth, trying to hide it. "Are you okay?" He asked, slowly walking over to where Reki was sitting on the ground.
"Yeah, I was trying to find something to cook, at least like ramen or something, but there's literally nothing in this goddamn house." All Langa could notice was Reki's red hair sticking up every which way. He had a pair of bright yellow sweatpants and a shirt probably three sizes too big for him with an animated character on the front that Langa didn't recognize. He had bags under his eyes that he assumed were from lack of sleep. And his cheeks were dusted with a gorgeous shade of red.
Langa could feel his heart do that weird flippy thing it's been doing recently. He had no idea what that was about.
No.
He wasn't going to do this to himself. No matter how cute he looked or how intrigued he was, he had decided that he wouldn't do this. Just be cool, Langa, be cool.
"We can go to the store now if you'd like. We can also grab the stuff you need." Reki started to stand up and give him a small smile. "That would be great, bro. Let me get dressed, and I'll be ready."
Langa noticed how Reki bounced when he walked. He walked like a little bunny. He walked over to the cabinet to grab a glass and poured water from the tap. He listened to the rustling behind Rekis's door. In some ways, it was soothing. Maybe just knowing that someone else's presence was there? He had been alone in Canada for so long that he forgot how nice it was to have company. He was just so used to being alone in his dorm, just working on homework for hours and hours. The only human interaction he would have during the day was greeting people in the class and his nightly calls with his mom.
He had wanted to move with his mother to Okinawa so severely. Still, she had thought it best for him to continue his education in Canada, at least for the rest of the year. Deep down, he knew that she was right. He had always been kind of... what's the word?
Oh.
A loner. That hadn't changed once he got to college, he had small interactions with people here and there, but he mostly kept to himself. He knew that it wasn't helping him, but what was he supposed to do? Talk to people? Fuck no. But maybe, just maybe, he could make at least one friend. That would put him a step in the right direction.
Reki's bright red hair popped up around the corner. "You ready?" Langa nodded, set his cup down, and grabbed his keys off the counter. Langa held the door open for him, and they slipped in. The light was still flickering on the porch. It was lightly snowing, and about 2 inches of snow was on the ground. There were trees surrounding the entire neighborhood, blanketed in snow. Langa felt drawn to the snowy woods near the back of the house. Maybe they could explore later. He turned his attention back to the car and unlocked the doors.
Langa got into the driver's seat, and Reki slipped beside him. "Can I play something?" Reki asked, putting on his seatbelt. "Yeah, of course," Langa muttered, handing him the aux cord. Reki took the cable and plugged it into his phone. Langa looked over his shoulder to reverse, catching a glimpse of Rekis's hair. It was a beautiful contrast to all the snow. He thought about stopping to look a little longer but decided against it and continued reversing.
