ELISA ESPINOSA WAS BUT A CHILD WHEN the world as she knew it came to an end, paving the way for a darker, more macabre one. A world where the dead walked amongst the living. They decayed, causing a sick, black-handed rot to spread over the land, to poison everyone and everything within their path. The rot suffocated Elisa, making her think that she would surely die, that she would have the air stolen straight from her lungs. Of course, a lack of oxygen would leave her weak, feeble, making her the perfect target for the dead. Her parents refused to let her be stolen, though, which was why they fought to protect her until their very last breaths . . . Despite their best efforts, walkers killed them, tearing them limb from limb, but as they laid dying, they called out to her, demanding that she go, that she do everything in her power to survive.

With blood thundering in her ears, white-hot, Elisa reached deep within herself and found a well of strength. Grief and fear pulled her down, threatening to cripple her, but she refused to give into them, to let the loss of her parents be for nothing. That was why she gritted her teeth, pushed her way to her feet, and ran as fast as her legs could possibly carry her. Days elapsed in which she ran, trying to put ample distance between herself and that god-forsaken place. It was only when she happened upon the Greene family farm that she stopped, that she finally took a moment to contemplate her future . . .
