chapter one | change of plans

"IT'S GONNA BE FUN ANN,"  Genesis promised with a smile, Ann nodded glumly. Even the colors of the butter yellow van seemed dull now, no more mountains, no more adventure. All because of a stupid phone call. Her sister seemed to pick up her mood because she scooted next to Ann.

The youngest Taylor didn't bother moving, she stood there, arms wrapped around her legs, knees to chest, and chin propped on them, Glaring at the car, and father, who was helping her brother's luggage in the trunk, while their retriever jumped around, barking and licking everything in sight.

"Ann...I knew you really wanted to go to the mountains, but... maybe it's destiny that you're not going there."

Classic Genesis, always about 'destiny' and 'true love' and 'soulmates,' she was that one who probably still believed in Storks bringing kids to parents. Which was in sharp contrast to Alden. Just like their names, he was all about books, she? Not so much.

"Or maybe destiny got screwed up Gen." Ann picked at a hole in her jeans. It was probably taking all of Genesis's power to not swat her hand away. She glared with a bit more venom at Edward Taylor, her father, and right now, the worst villain of all. Including Darth Vader.

"Destiny doesn't exist." A voice interrupted, Genesis sighed when Alden plopped down on the bench, a crimson book in hand and a fed-up expression on his face. "The universe is random."

"Yes, but," Genesis suddenly straightened up, smiling, before singing out the last part. "Random for a reason!"

Ann and Alden looked at her blankly, and she sighed. "Beetlejuice? Nobody? No Reason?"

The youngest Taylors shook their heads. Alden rolled his eyes, and Ann huffed. Genesis looked up to the summer sky, bright blue with clouds that could have been spun from cotton candy.

"You said we'd be going to London." Hector frowned, Helena didn't take the news better, both had researched about London for weeks, right during which their mother was filming 'Golden Touch' with a few celebrities that Helena didn't care to remember.

"Change of plans." Keira Moss said testily, she slammed the trunk of the car down, loudly enough to startle a nearby flock of turdus melina, blackbirds, to flap off. Even near their villa in West Sussex, the clouds were gray, the sky's been perfectly bright before, and over one hour, it clouded over, just like her and Hector's mood.

"Change of plans." Hector mimicked, their mother glared at him, blunt as he was, he wasn't wrong, it was simply preposterous that vacation plans changed so easily, not even bothering to tell her children about who this Dexter was. Why were they going to a place in the middle of nowhere? And more importantly, why she was driving herself, after 'Colossal,' she hired a driver specifically for that, Mr. Outis.
