A Mascot (also called a familiar) is a nonhuman, magical companion, that works alongside their Magical Girl. The Magical that they are associated with is their partner. Some teams just have one Mascot for the entire team, while others, like my team, have one for each member.
I highly recommend Mascots, because recruiting one can help speed the process of becoming a Magical Girl. They are versed in the subject, and can gift you some of the magic from their world.
The only problem with them gifting magic, is that you will often not be able to choose your powers, outfit, or codename. Your Mascot may even give you a more concrete and noble goal, if you do not have that yet. This can range from saving their kingdom, to helping them beat their rival, and many more possibilities.
However, if you have a more lenient Mascot, you will be able to manifest any initial ideas you had much faster than if you were on your own with subliminals.
My team personally has multiple Mascots, with me, Caesa, and Ruvia each having their own Mascot companion. These Mascots hail from the land Anoucuria, a kingdom that raises Mascots, and trains them in finding the right partner or team for them.
My Mascot is actually my profile picture, and her name is Eleanora. When I was searching for a Mascot to recruit, Queen Pomona of Anoucuria had sent Eleanora on this mission to find a Magical Girl partner. This was because of her unfriendly attitude -- she was very snarky and sarcastic, traits that are not desired in Mascots. So, she was sent to Earth, along with Oliver and Rory, two other Mascots, to make sure she was actually completing her task.
Once I found her... the rest was history. I even got to visit the Queen in Anoucuria, where she further identified the evil force in our small town. Apparently, this force is a group of Magical Enemies, that call themselves "Pyrena". To this day, we are still stopping their schemes to sow discord and contention into the heart of our town.
Lastly, Queen Pomona then gifted me my powers. At this time, I knew what I wanted my outfit and appearance to be. I even knew what weapons and transformation item I wanted to use. But, I was still stuck on my powers. I was very lucky to have met the Queen, as she gave me Strawberry-based magic. As stated in the previous chapter, all of my teammates have berry-themed magic, and that is thanks to Queen Pomona. Her kingdom is based on fruits, berries just happening to be a very specific kind of fruit.
Eleanor is still a bit snarky today, but her attitude has softened a bit. I think she has grown to like not only me, but my teammates as well. Being snarky and sarcastic is a part of her: something we cannot remove completely. But I think that now, she understands that the other people in the world have feelings, and should be treated with at least some respect. She is learning compassion, and is on a journey just like I am to grow.
I should probably back up a bit, and explain that to find a Mascot, it takes a mixture of subliminals and physical searching. Unpartnered Mascots will usually be wandering the area you want to protect, especially if that area has evil forces and enemies. As you use these subliminals, you'll start to see them, and then you can reach out to them.
Once they have been recruited as your partner can they only fully be seen in reality. Once this happens, they will usually have a disguise, like becoming a plush or bag, to blend in.
That is all I have to discuss in terms of Mascots... for now. My teammates Mascots will get discussed next chapter, when we discuss teammates.
