I wake up with a start when the fire alarm starts going off. I jump out of bed and run to the kitchen where I see mom with a plate of breakfast. Suprisingly un-burnt.
"What's With the fire alarm?" I question grabbing the plate and sitting down at the counter while she gets the alarm to stop.
"I had trouble with the french toast..." She looked sad for a moment "your dad was always the one who made the french toast while I made the bacon and eggs I just thought..." I stayed silent just watching her waiting for her to continue. "I just thought I could try and do something to make it up to you that I don't spend a lot of time at home" She smiled at me still with sadness lacing her blue eyes. "But nonetheless don't worry I got this under control" I just simply nod beginning to eat not really sure what to say.
"um... Thanks, mom" I wipe my mouth before scooting away from the counter. "I...uh... I promised uncle Jona I'd stop by for a bit today but we can..." I take a gulp of water from the glass on the counter. "but we are still on for dinner tonight I promise" Mom looked at me with these sad puppy dog eyes that made me shrink back a tiny bit.
"I was hoping to spend more time together before I have to fly back out on the seventeenth but I assume we can spend plenty of time together on your birthday" she smiles as my face lights up. If she is here on the sixteenth this will mark the first time in a long time that she will be at my birthday. I was excited a hopeful to see what happens.
Maybe she will take me somewhere fun that isn't a restaurant that makes me feel like a porcelain doll locked in a cabinet being observed by all that walk by. I feel my phone buzz looking down it's a text from Steven mentioning he'll be at the flower shop in a few hours. his texts bring so much of my focus to the time. It was nine which meant I needed to leave now in order to get there by about nine thirty so I could make Steven's bouquet.
I excuse myself and go take a quick shower before pulling on a pair of jeans and a black shirt with the flower shop's name and logo on it.
I make a quick escape making sure to grab my stuff like my bag, shoes, and phone. Pulling on my shoes when I get outside before walking the few blocks to the flower shop.
When I get there I give uncle Jona a hug before heading back to drop off my bag and say hi to uncle Nick who was on the phone discussing a deal for an after-party or whatnot. I give him a wave before going up front and starting on the bouquet I promised.
"Hey Willow tree... is that another favor for Steven?" he has a bit of sass on the last part "that boy needs to stop waiting last minute for the flowers he gives to Mickey" I laugh at Jona knowing how much he and Steven get along.
"At least he pays for them and plus I'm the one doing it" his face lightens softly before he rolls his eyes. "anyway can you get me a few black Dalias I want to pair them with the red roses and create a ladybug." Jona smiles as I gather a few roses and poppies.
"You definitely got your dad's creativity and your mom's brains... everything you do reminds me of how amazing you are my darling girl" he sounds sad at the mention of dad but quickly changes his tone so as not to bum me out.
He kisses the back of my head lightly as I work before going and grabbing the flowers I needed. Stopping to turn up the radio. I smile as Dancing Machine by the Jackson 5 can be heard traveling through the store.
I was raised on Motown, Funk, and a whole lot of Punk. Something I always remember is "no matter what kind of music it is you can always find at least one song you can dance to or vibe to ya just got to give it a chance" or at least that's what Nona taught me.
When noon hits Steven walks in being punctual as always. We talk about his plans to surprise Mickey. Steven tells me about his plans for a movie and dinner date at Mickey's favorite dinner named Milley's Which I may add I recommended for they have the best pie. I mention that mom is taking me out somewhere and we make our attempts to guess which of the popular restaurants we may be going to.
