It had been a long day of travelling and the girl was tired. Her small feet dragged in their brown boots as she followed Veronica, the Guild Leader, up the steep hill towards where she would be spending the night. She brushed her long pink hair out of her face and lifted her calm, icy blue eyes from the ground to see a small, quaint farm with smoke climbing up towards the sky from the chimney of a cozy cottage. Veronica had mentioned that the girl's house would not be ready for about a week, and that in the meantime she would be staying with a fellow farmer. Veronica knocked on the sturdy oak door and a small, cheerful woman who looked to be in her eighties opened the door and stepped forward.

"Oh, Hello! You must be the new farmer Veronica was telling me about! What was your name, dear?"

"I'm Annie. It's very nice to meet you." She bowed exhaustedly to show her respect, after all, she was letting her stay free of charge for a week, and Annie couldn't afford to stay at the inn with no income as of yet to speak of.

"Nice to meet you to. I'm Eda. I've been working on this farm since I was a little girl when my parents owned it. Thank you very much, Veronica, I can take it from here, dear." Eda waddled inside as Veronica muttered some goodbyes and took her leave of the two. When Annie followed Eda inside she found a cozy common room with a kitchenette, a fireplace, two armchairs and a large bookshelf. In the middle of the room sat a large, honey coloured table that almost touched the walls of the small room. There was one room to each side of the entryway - presumably bedrooms - and the smell of corn on the cob and apple pie filled the air. "You must be starved, sweetie! Here, sit at the table and have something to eat." Eda handed her a plate of the sweet corn with a warm roll with melted butter and a slice of pie. She then took a plate for herself and sat across the table from Annie.

"Well, now. I don't suppose you have any experience working on a farm, do you?" Eda asked with a sweet smile. Annie looked up from her food and responded that she hadn't. "That will make things rather difficult for you, won't it, now that you'll be running a farm by yourself? I was thinking that it might be a good idea if I show you the ropes while you're here. Of course, I will be paying you for all your help."

"Oh no, ma'am, you don't have to do that! It's enough that you're letting me stay here with you. I can't take your money!"

"Ha, Ha! Dear, with you just starting out it is the least I can do to help you get on your feet! Besides, having you here reminds me of when my Grandson lived with me." It was decided that Annie's farming lessons would start tomorrow and last all week long. Annie was excited, but nervous. What if I can't do this? What if I'm not cut out for life on the farm? Annie shook her worried thoughts out of her head and finished.

The afternoon turned to evening as Annie and Eda continued to cheerfully get to know one another. After supper was over, they washed their dishes and Annie was shown to the guest room, where she wrote in her journal and addressed herself to sleep.
