Our forces had suffered a serious blow attempting the recovery mission in Atlanta. We lost Lily, and have lost contact with the squad assigned to Ashlyn. Lost is the word. Dead or alive those girls would give us answers.
With twenty soldiers missing and or dead, this was going to be a bitch to cover up. The people here wouldn't accept their deaths from a routine trip up north. This project required the utmost secrecy. The less people that know about this the better.
All the moral issues surrounding this case were ridiculous. The council were eager for any progress to be made at all. Especially after the fall of the Los Angeles compound. After the disaster of last time the council put me in charge. I would glean answers. I won't make the same mistakes, this will not end with disaster. not like last time.
That had been back when Heathburn was in charge, before she went insane and destroyed years of progress. The scientists had almost found the cure, supposedly isolating the immunised gene or bacteria. Heathburn had been agitated for weeks, some thought it was the lack of progress. We now know it was a pychotic break. The woman was the first notified after the monumental discovery, the only other person the scientists told. She murdered them, the footage showing her hacking up the men in a gruesome rage. She trashed their computers, setting alight the valuable software. Evaline was in a drug induced coma after her last operation, the woman was strapped to the gurney, defenceless.
Heathburn locks herself in the room, setting herself and Evaline on fire.
By the time any assistance arrived both areas were raging infernos. The areas were able to be contained, yet nothing could be saved.
Somehow Darren found out about his wife's murder. Ended up escaping with all the kids. We were set back ten years overnight.
Darren let humanity suffer for years by keeping those children hidden.
But the situation had changed now. We have Nathan and Brennan.
I stood watching the two boys, both heavily sedated, strapped to gurney in their concrete cell. So much like their mother.
They both had been trouble on the way in.
The blonde one, Nathan, had actually broken one of the soldiers arm. The soldiers retaliated, even from here I could see his bruised and battered face. one of the men went too far,and ended up shooting the boy in the leg.For a while we thought we would lose him. The soldier who did it was given the maximum punishment. He'll never have the chance to make that mistake again.
The other boy, Brennan, appeared to be the opposite of his twin. His dark looks were in contrast to his brothers fairness. But they were brothers, you could tell by the way he fought. One soldier had a broken nose, another a broken wrist.
The council wanted answers, and soon. These boys had a fifty fifty chance of sharing their mothers genetics. We needed to test whether Evaline's immune genetics were passed on to her sons. Briggs, the head scientist, already believes the immune trait is recessive. With luck these boys will carry her main genetic makeup.
I am willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. For now I will let Briggs carry out his tests.
I am looking forward to talking to these boys. No doubt I am the devil in their eyes, especially after their father was killed under my command. The world is bigger than them, and they need to understand that sacrifice is for the greater good.
