Darius looked bored as he hung his head to glance at the time displayed on his watch. Upon noticing that not even a minute had passed, he let out an impatient sigh and upped the tempo of his foot tapping on the wooden floor. He straightened out his white suit in an almost lazy fashion. He blankly stared at the man in a black cloak before him. He carried a massive book that looked as though it was centuries old, and recited the words within it with utter devotion. It was a shame that Darius felt no such devotion towards the woman in white beside him.
She was pleasant enough, but he did not feel any strong particular emotion towards her. It was her heritage that got her here. It was heritage that got them both here. Heritage. Tradition. Duty. The words rang out in Darius' head like a mantra. They have since he was a child and the ways of their people were ingrained into his brain. Train. Marry. Bear children. Then either die on duty or retire.
It was prophesied that he was destined for the woman standing beside him as she is the only Carmichael of age. It was said that in her presence he would feel the strongest of emotions and harbour the innate feeling of love and protection towards her. Complete conviction and destined devotion. He felt none of that.
But, their union was fated. Signed, sealed and delivered. Prophecies were custom, and in Darius' culture, custom was law, and the law was the law. And the law states that in the marriage ritual, the man and his destined shall touch after the priest utters the commanding words whereupon the band of union shall appear on your left ring finger and your right wrist, binding each other for eternity emotionally and physically.
"And so, by the first touch, you shall be wed, bound for eternity, emotionally, physically and, spiritually."
The floor beneath the couple began to light up, a circle surrounding them beginning to form, a symbol of their everlasting union. With a touch in the circle, a union is formed. A stern expression painted on their faces the couple turned to one another. As they did, Darius' face somehow became even more forlorn. But it had to be done.
And so, Darius slowly lifted his hands up and out before him.
Just as he was doing so, a hole appeared from the ceiling above them creating a gateway of some sorts.
Just as he was doing so, a woman emerged from the said gateway and started to fall straight in front of him.
Just as he fully stretched his arms out, the mysterious woman fell into his arms.
