Darkness. Just a black pit of nothing. It swirled around me, not settling in one place for long. Nothing that I was seeing felt right, like I didn’t belong to this world. Soon the darkness settled, and the smoke came falling in. I couldn’t smell the smoke, but I could feel it. It circled me just like the darkness did but calmer. In the distance I heard innocent voices coming in and out like a rowboat going to shore but caught in a tide. Then, the noise faded. The smoke started violently moving consuming me. I couldn’t breathe it entered me, violating the broken mess I’ve become. Choking me. I couldn’t breathe.
The smoke then started screaming this unearthly sound. Rumbling from inside me. Shaking me from the inside out. It got louder and louder, then it stopped. The smoke left me, leaving like it entered and it came together to form this monstrosity of a being. It felt like death, but I know it's not death. I have been near death, and he didn’t hold himself with the sickness that has fallen upon the kingdom I call home. The thing noticed me, and it gave the same unsettling scream as it did when it was just smoke. It then disappeared leaving me in the pitch black of the far corners of my brain.
It was dark for a while, not a single sound creeped from me, too worried that the creature would return. So, I just stood there silently waiting. Waiting to see if it will return and finish me while I'm venerable. It didn’t, instead red and orange lights flickered, taunting me. It then flew into a huge blaze, and I could hear screaming horrible screaming of people being burned alive. I wanted to move, to help them but I was frozen. I could not move. The screams would not stop, they would not stop. The creature came back. Even though he had a mask I could still tell he was looking at me. Smiling, taunting me. Telling me without a single sound that it knows what I did, and it won't let me forget. We stood in silence. I watched him as he was watching me. We stared at each other for a while, making no move. It just stared at me. Then it vanished.
The screaming had slowly faded away till all I heard was a young girl's voice.
‘Father’ she said. I saw her run to a figment of what I used to be. The old me picked her up and spun her around. A distant memory. I looked away but wherever I looked they were in front of me. Taunting me. Reminding me of what happened. It haunted me. The never-ending torment of her death. Her mother faded in and stood beside the old me. My wife. I miss her dearly. The three were laughing and happy. Then they faded. The never-ending torment of what I used to have and can never get back.
The screaming started getting louder again, but it was only a single voice this time. It was deafening. It sounded like a little boy. I couldn’t tell what he was saying but as he got closer and louder, he was saying.
“Dr. Frost." It got louder yelling “Dr. Frost.”
“Dr. Frost.”
“Dr. Frost”
“DR. FROST”
Then I woke up.
