Chapter One:
"Mer are you okay?" Cristina asked from outside the bathroom stall.
I looked down at the pregnancy test box to make sure what I was seeing was true. It was. Two pink lines meant I was pregnant.
"No I think I'm pregnant!" I replied from inside the stall.
"No" she said in disbelief.
I sat thinking to myself how this could happen. I'm seventeen only a junior in high school. Derek and I had used a condom.
"Mer just say something so I know you're okay" said Cristina.
"I'm not Cristina! I'm pregnant!" I replied.
"Are you going to tell Derek?" Cristina asked.
"I guess I have to." I said.
Derek has baseball practice today and I'm supposed to meet him afterwards. What's he going to say? Will he leave me? What will my mom say? She probably won't care she doesn't care what I do. I put the stick back in the box and shoved the box in my bag. I came out of the stall to see Cristina looking at me with a smirk on her face.
"This isn't funny." I said.
"I know, but holy shit Mer!" she said.
"Look I've got to go! I have class!" I said as I scurried out of the bathroom.
All of that afternoon I couldn't help but look at the clock dreading having to tell Derek. Before I knew it I was standing in the parking lot watching the baseball team slowly come out of the pit. Derek looked so good. His tight pants and muscles revealed. His hair perfect and a little sweat on his forehead. He came walking over first with a big smile and then when he saw my expressions he faded into a confused look. He landed a soft kiss on my cheek and then backed out.
"What's wrong?" he asked nervously.
"I, I need to tell you something." I said
"Okay, go ahead" he replied.
"I, oh my gosh I can't believe I'm evening say this. I'm, I'm pregnant."

Chapter Two:
As the words left my mouth I felt relief. And then I felt a terrible feeling. Something I had never felt before. As I looked up his lips began to curve up into a smile.
"You're smiling?" I asked.
"Mer, of course I don't want a child at the age of 17. But let's make light of the situation. We are having a baby. Me and you. And our child will be beautiful." he said.
Did he really just say that? He's crazy! I'm pregnant! I mean, I guess he's right in some ways.
"Derek, I love you."
"I love you too."
The next morning, I woke up and thought about everything that happened. Maybe it's a dream. Maybe all I need to do is pinch myself.
"Meredith!" My mom said knocking on my door.
"What mom?" I said maybe a little bit too rudely.
"I'm leaving for work. Goodbye."
"Goodbye."
Work. That's just about all my mother ever thought about. My mom had been a police officer almost her entire life. She always tried to justify her never being around with the fact that she was saving people. Yeah sure Mom you're saving lives. You know who's life isn't being taken care of or saved. Mine. My mom she always wants more from me. Telling her I was pregnant wasn't going to help.
I found the strength to once again pry myself out from under the covers. I walked to my mirror and lifted my flannel pajamas up so that you could see my stomach. It was so hard to imagine there was a tiny human inside of me. How could I be a mother? I'd be terrible. A child wouldn't want me as it's mother. I barley have one I don't know anything. I let go of my shirt and and stepped to left reaching down and pulling open my dresser drawers. I lifted my tee shirts finding one suitable for the day. I ended up with a grey V neck tee shirt. Reaching one drawer lower I pulled out a pair of faded jeans. I changed and then moved to my bathroom to brush my teeth. I opened my cabinet drawer pulled out my toothbrush and paste. After doing my minimal makeup and putting my hair up in a low ponytail I went downstairs. I had some Total cereal and what tasted like spoiled milk then grabbed my backpack from the chair at the kitchen table. I got to the door and slipped my black converse on my feet. I went outside and walked to the end if the driveway. The bus should have been there but it was never on time.
By the time lunch hit I was starved. As usual I went through the cafeteria line with Cristina. We always debate what looks most "appetizing", mystery meat or the sloppy joe. Cristina usually got something healthy, I always tried but my tray usually ended up with a combination of pizza, chips, and maybe some cookies. Cristina never thanked the lunch ladies but I made sure too. She was harsh and didn't show her feelings much but she was my person and I loved her. When we got out of the line we went to sit down at our usual table. Cristina and I sat next to each other across from Derek and Owen. Owen is Cristina's boyfriend. Even though they seem to be so not meant for each other, their love overrules. The table behind us was Callie and Arizona. Arizona moves here last semester, she's in a military family so she moves a lot. Callie and Arizona are lesbians. They seem so in love. Even though people give them the hardest times they're not discouraged. I admire it. Mark and Lexie sat with them too. They haven't been dating long. Derek and Mark grew up together in New York. Derek moved here to Seattle at age ten and Mark at thirteen. They're like brothers. Lexie, oh Lexie kind of showed up three years ago. I was a freshman finally fitting in and then I come home from school one day to find her sitting on my coach besides my mother. She explained my father was her father. He left my family when I was just a little girl because of his alcoholism. Apparently he went off to a new family but his new wife had been in a car crash and died and my father was, well my father. So she had no where else to stay. My mother and I both weren't happy about the situation but for some crazy reason my mother agreed. It took my a long while to warm up to Lexie. But now I can't imagine my life without her. I just hope Lexie is happy with Mark. He's got a bad reputation. He's... a whore. A total whore.
The entire lunch was filled with awkward conversations. Since Derek and Cristina knew I was pregnant but Owen didn't, there was a lot to talk about, but we couldn't.
CHAPTER 3
I was walking after first period I couldn't help get barf from morning sickness. Everyone stopped and looked. I could already here the whispers. "Is she crazy?" "Ew disgusting." "Dude, she's knocked up."
I ran as fast as I could to the girls room and into the stall. I burst into tears. I surely wasn't ready to tell anyone but now everyone will know.
"Uhm Mer you in here?" Cristina said.
I sniffled and wiped my tears opening the stall door.
"Mer, you must be um... feeling some feelings. Would you like to talk about them." she said nervously.
"Cristina everyone knows!" I shouted.
"They were going to find out. Maybe it's better this way. I'm sorry." she let the words out as she came over and gave me a hug.
Cristina and I, we don't hug. When we do it means something. It made me smile. And then we released and we say together on the bathroom floor just holding hands for a couple minutes. And then the bell rang for second period.
"I guess we should go" Cristina suggested.
At lunch Owen tried to make conversation. Eventually I just blurted it out, "I'm pregnant! Okay I know we all are wondering so yes I'm pregnant!" I said louder then I intended and people from surrounding tables began to stare. Callie and Mark looked at me in complete shock. Arizona gave me her super magic smile. And Lexie, she gave me a look of true sympathy and comfort. She got up from her table walked over and grabbed my hand. She walked me from the table to the courtyard outside and sat me down on a bench.
"Meredith, it's going to be okay."
I just looked down.
"I promise."
I looked up at here worried as ever.
"I will be here for you."
That made me smile slightly.
"Have you told your Mom?" she asked.
We both laughed. We knew the answer was no.
"If you want I'll tell her with you." she added.
"Thank you Lexie, but I'd like to do it alone."
We sat for a couple seconds before I got up and indicated we could return back to the cafeteria. When I walked in everyone's eyes were on me but I walked tall. When I got closer to my table Derek was smiling talking about our child. He optimism was getting me through this. Owen began to congratulate me as I say down. Cristina was caught way off guard. "I'm not sure this is such a good thing Owen." He said quickly "Of course it is Meredith and Derek are having a child."
"I will never have kids." Cristina said confidently. Owen began to look saddened.
Just then Derek put his hand on my cheek and looked straight into my eyes. I felt like I was melting into him. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"No." I answered. He leaned over and kissed my softly. His lips warmed mine. He leaned back and we both smiled. The bell rang and we all went our separate ways.
CHAPTER 4
(Just so know it's early on a Saturday morning)
"Owww!", I said foolishly as Derek and I maneuvered ourselves into a comfortable position in passenger seat of his pick up truck. I wrapped my leg around his waist as he lifted me into his lap. He kissed me hard and fast I felt butterflies flutter in my stomach. I kissed him back and felt his warmth against me. Just as he was about to lift my shirt. His neighbor Miranda spotted us. Miranda was a sweet old lady whom Im sure at this point hated the both of us. She looked at us and we could see her mouthing the words "Really!?" She turned around and walked back into her house Derek and I laughed, we interrupted by my phone loudly ringing. "Don't answer please." He begged. "I have to, I'll be quick." I looked down and it was my mother. I flipped open the phone and pressed it to my ear as Derek grabbed my ass. "Stop it!" I said jokingly.
"Hello is this Meredith Grey, Ellis Grey's daughter?" A strange deep man's voice asked.
"Yes who's this?"
"My name is Richard Webber I work with your mother you need to come to Seattle Grace Hospital right now." He said.
"Why!?" I asked and my facial expression changed. Derek could tell he began to look worried.
"You're mother's been shot in the line of duty. It doesn't look good."
"Oh my god, I'm on my way!" And hung up the phone.
"What's wrong?" Derek asked.
"Just drive!" I shouted!
"Where?" He asked.
"Seattle Grace Hospital, Derek my mother got shot!" I said with a tear forming in my eye.
When we got to the hospital a dark tall skinned man came walking towards Derek and I.
"Hello I'm Richard we talked on the phone, you must be Meredith."
"Yeah, and this is my boyfriend Derek. Is my mom okay." I asked.
"The doctors aren't sure yet. She's in surgery right now."
I couldn't believe this was all happening. Why now?
"What the hell happened!"
"Calm down its going to be all right" he said as he came to hug me. I shook him off. Who does he think he is my father?
"Stop! Just tell me what happened."
"Okay you're mother was called out on a report of domestic violence. The typical husband abusing wife and the neighbors were concerned. We weren't aware the husband had a gun and you're mother didn't wait for backup. When she got there we believe he shot her as she was coming through the door. She's got a bullet in her chest. He then shot his wife and their five year old son. Neighbors heard the shots and called us. We got their as fast as we could. The mother died on the scene but the boy is in surgery too with a bullet to the abdomen." As he finished telling us what happened I could see he was very upset. Were he and my mother close? Never mind it didn't matter. I looked over to Derek,
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah let's just go sit down." We went and sat down on couch in the waiting room. I rested my head on Derek's shoulder, he put his arm around me. He gave me a sense of safety, I closed my eyes.
"Mer, Meredith wake up!" Derek said shaking me.
"What, what is it?"
"Your mother is out of surgery, she's okay. They said they were able to repair the damage with minimal complications." He said with a smile on his face.
"Oh, that's good." I said.
"Mer why aren't you happy?"
"I am." I responded. I know I should be jumping up and down but the truth was weren't that close.
"You should go see her." He suggested.
"Will you come?"
"If you want."
"I do." I said and then we stood up and he intertwined he's fingers with mine. We began walking when I asked "Where's her room?"
"They came by and said shed be in the ICU room 427." He said.
"Oh, how do we get there?"
"Follow me." He insisted.
We walked to an elevator where we waited for what seemed like forever. When we got on we were surrounded by doctors and nurses. We pressed floor 4 and rode up. When we got to the 4th floor the door opened and we walked out. We both looked around to see a sign of which way to go.
"This way." He said.
We walked down a long hall until we reached room 427. When we got inside my mother was attached to at least four different machines.
"I though you said she was okay?" I asked Derek.
"She is, she just needs to wake up and it might be awhile." He said trying to reassure me. Great I thought more waiting. And that's what happened we waited and waited until finally four hours later we heard my mom trying to say something. The nurses came in and removed her tube.
"What happened?" She asked. Just then Richard walked in and came right over to her bed and grabbed her hand.
"Jack Stafford, the husband in the domestic violence case shot you when you got to the house." He said.
"I'm so stupid, such a stupid mistake." My mom uttered.
"You're not stupid Mom!" I said.
When eight o'clock came around it was Derek, Richard, my Mom and I.
"Mer I'm sorry but I have to. My mom's gonna kill me if I'm not home." He said.
"It's okay, you did more than enough. Will you stay just one more minute I want to tell my mom." I said.
"About the baby?" He asked.
"Yes." I said.
He smiled grabbed my hand and we walked to her bed.
"Mom?"
"Yes?" She asked.
"There's something I, we need to tell you." I said. She gave me a look of come on what the hell is it.
"I'm pregnant." I said so scared of her response.
"You're what!? Meredith! What happened to you?" She said. I fell silent for a moment. And then I screamed "You! You happened to me!"
"You're never around, you're always at work! I grew up with no mother, or at least not a real one!" I grabbed Derek's hand and stormed out.
From the time we left the room until we got to the car was silent. I think he didn't know what to say. "Mer are you okay?" He asked.
"We're not talking about this." I said.
"Okay, do you want to come to my house I'm sure my mother wouldn't mind considering all that's happened. We should probably tell her too." He suggested.
"Okay." I said. He walked me to the passenger side door and helped me in. He began to buckle my seat belt but I refused. I wasn't a baby. I was fine. Yeah, I was fine. I just needed to keep telling myself I was. Derek started the car and put his left hand on the steering wheel and with his left and wrapped it around mine. I rested my head against the window and stared out.
We pulled into Derek's driveway and we both opened the doors and met at the front of the car.
"You ready?" He asked.
"As I'll ever be." I answered.
He held my hand and we walked to the front door. He got his keys out of his pocket and opened the front door.
"Derek it's late het in here! His mother Carolyn called.
She was the sweetest mom you could ask for. Derek also has four sisters. Nancy, Kathleen, Liz and Amelia. Derek's dad had been shot when when Derek was young. His father owned a shop when he was younger, and one day two robbers approached him and demanded that he give up the watch Derek's mom had bought for him. When he refused, the robbers shot him to death, with Derek and his sister witness. "Coming Mom." He called back. We walked through the main hallway to the dining room where his sisters and mother were sitting at the table playing some a game of cards before bed. As I entered the room Carolyn came over and hugged me.
"Hello sweetie, how are?" She asked.
When I didn't answer Derek stepped in, "Mom Meredith's mother was shot earlier today."
"Oh my goodness is she okay?" She asked.
"She's okay she had surgery earlier today and is in recovery." Derek said.
"Mom could you come with us into the other room for a second?" He asked.
"Sure, what is it?" She asked as she walked into the other room and sat down on the couch. Derek stopped me and asked, "You still want to tell her?" I looked him in the eyes, "Yes." I said.
We walked into the other room and Derek and I sat on the couch across from Carolyn.
"Derek you're scaring me what is it?" She said jokingly.
I looked at Derek and he looked at me. We had this connection where sometimes we didn't even words we just knew what we were trying to say. He held my hand and I looked at Carolyn, "I'm pregnant."
The room fell silent. She didn't speak and I couldn't tell if she was upset.
"Mom please say something." Derek begged. She stood up and walked over to me. And then she hugged me. She just found out I was having her grandchild and she hugged me. There was tears forming in her eyes.
"I don't want my son having a child at this age. I don't want a grandchild at this age, but what I want doesn't matter. I will always love my son. And you. And I will this baby." She said.
Derek stood up and hugged his mother.
