Chapter 4 • Nightmares
"Chey!! Wake up... C'mon, we have a big day ahead of us!!..."
I sat up in curiosity, rubbing the sleepiness out of my eyes. "What?!" I questioned in a sleepy tone. I looked around the room... It was my room. I was a little confused. Was I dreaming this whole time about being kidnapped?
"Coming!" I heard someone shout. Just then, the door swung open, and a duplicate of myself came running into the room. "Oh my..." my voice trailed off in a little panic. I sat in my own bed as I watched my other self run around my room and put things into a backpack. "Hello?" I said out loud. But it's like my double couldn't hear me. "What's going on?" I questioned as I waved my hands. Apparently, she couldn't see me either.
Once again, the door swung open. Only this time, Rick came walking in. "C'mon babe! We're gonna be late!" he said while pulling on my double's arm. "Alright, alright." she said while slipping her arms through the straps of the backpack. She then jumped onto his back and they both left the room. "What's happening?" I questioned while getting out of the bed and running to follow them.
When I ran out of the room, it was if I ran out of the house. Because I was now standing on the front porch of our house. I looked around in confusion again. "Wake up Chey!" I screamed out loud while staring up at the sky. To my surprise when I looked back down, I was now sitting across of Rick at a picnic table.
"Babe?" I whispered while reaching out to touch his hand. But before I could reach his hand, I heard a twig snap behind me. When I turned around, I saw myself laying on a picnic blanket. Giggling out loud. "Chey?" I called out. My double on the blanket sat up and looked toward me. "Can you hear me?" I questioned. She stood up, and walked toward me with a worried look on her face. "Chey please!" I said in a shakey, nervous voice. But she walked right past me. "Someone please wake me up!" I screamed with fright.
I started to hear a low growl behind me. And as I turned, I saw rick making his way to a pile of large boulders. He disappeared behind the boulders, and I called out "Rick?" There was no answer. I then heard more low growls and the sound of bones crunching. "Is he transmuting?... He never changes if I'm with him. Not unless he's trying to protect me..." Before even finishing my thoughts, a wolf was already walking out from behind the rocks. "Rick?" I called out again, hoping he'd respond this time. But the look in his lilac eyes, was what made me feel like I was no longer safe. It was like he didn't know who I was at all. "Please Rick! It's me, Chey! I know you can understand me!" I cried out. But it was like he understood nothing I was saying. He slowly crept toward me, snarling and baring his teeth at me. And just as I thought about it, he lunged at me.
I screamed and ducked down as quick as I could. Just as I hit the ground, I heard snarling and the sounds of claws tearing through flesh. I turned and looked to where Rick had landed. He was at least six to seven feet away from me, pinning someone to the ground. I slowly stood up and glanced over, hoping Rick wouldn't turn on me. I peered at his victim as he clawed the familiar mask off of the person's face. "Me?" I gasped in shock.
I looked at Rick's victim, laying there with bloody gashes. She looked exactly like me. Except her hair was black, and her eyes were as grey as a stormy rain cloud. Rick glanced up at me and and took a few steps in my direction, with his head tucked down and his tail between his legs. "Please! Don't hurt me!" I cried out. Just then, that bone crunching noise sounded again. Rick was turning back into human form. He reached his hand out to me, and I slowly took a few steps toward him. That's when I realized that his eyes weren't their usual warm chocolate brown. They were grey, just like his victim that layed lifeless on the ground beside us.
A feeling overcame me and I shook my head as I tried to take a few steps back. My instincts kept telling me to run. But I just stood there, my legs frozen in place.
I finally got myself to take a few steps back. As I did, the look on Rick's face began to turn. He started growling and shaking, as if he was about to morph into wolf form again.
I turned and started running for my life. I wanted to put as much space between Rick and I, but I could hear his footsteps getting closer to me. I turned around to see him just a few feet away from me. He jumped at me with force, changing into wolf form in mid air. Right as he landed on me, pinning me to the ground, another feeling came over me. "Bás!" I screamed while tightening up my fist and jabbing it right into his ribs. He fell over to his side, panting a few times before letting out a long howl. Then he layed there, still, lifeless. I leaned over to check if he was still alive. And just as I did, he sprung up at me...
