Escape

A loud shriek echoed through the poorly lit hallways. Light flickering above me casting shadows on the walls and making them seem to be dancing. I sat on the cold floor away from the bed that looks comforting but in reality the floor is much nicer than that God forsaken bed.

The screaming continued on until a guard walked past my room in a hurry. Within a matter of seconds the screaming stopped and only a faint whimper was heard throughout the dark halls.

'One...'

'Two...'

'Three...'

'Four...'

'Five...'

I counted in my head then stood up from my curled-up position and walked to the head of the metal bed. I lifted up the pillow with my frail hands and saw underneath perfectly waiting a single key. The key to my escape.

I grabbed the key and walked over to the cold, metal door. A small hole was situated on it so we could receive our food without them having to come into our rooms themselves. The door handle is on the other side of the door and just far enough for me to be able to reach down to the handle with the key, unlock the door, then make my escape out.

A nurse was walking past my door which caused me to stop in my tracks. He was lanky. I can easily take him but the only problem is he is able to scream for help. That help entails much stronger guards to come and take care of me which then guarantees I will never escape. I waited until the nurse has turned the corner then proceed to the door. Once I'm at the door I hesitantly push my hand through the small square hole. I look down both ends of the hallway to see no one coming then continue with my plan. After searching for the hand I was able to find it and put the key into it. I then turn it causing a "click" noise to come from it being unlocked. I bring my hand out of the hole then push the door slowly open.

Outside of the depressing room I somehow feel stronger and more confident. Like as if my plan will actually come to fruition. With a confident stride I turn to my left and walk down the hallway. That confidence quickly faded when I saw a foot come around the corner. I found an empty room, got in it, and crouched down so no one could see me. A guard walked past the room I'm in and my room without a second glance.

'I'm going to have to be more careful.' I thought to myself.

I walked out of the room and hesitantly walked to the end of the hallway. The day has already begun to finish which meant the nurses left and more guards came to keep the patients in line.

"BOOM!"

I flinched when a loud noise came loudly. 'It must be storming.' Another boom came after the last one, but wasn't as loud. That was then that the lights went out. The flickering lights were snuffed out and replaced with a low glow of red lights hanging precariously above. These red lights however were spread far apart from each other which lit up the hallway but not by much.

Recovering from my shock I continued on my way to the entrance of this building. To my freedom.

After some time I found my way to the end of the hallway and in a large, dark hexagonal room with no one around. To my right I see a large wooden desk. I have finally found my way to the front desk. Standing ominously in front of me are two glass doors that lead to the outside.

Quickly I walked over to the doors with a smile plastered on my face. I grab the handles and pull. "What?" The doors won't move. I try to open it two more times but to no avail the doors wouldn't open. I turned around and walked over to the front desk.

Once behind it I searched around for keys or some way to easily open the doors. My search became frantic. I can't be this close to freedom and not at least go into the world once more.

"BOOM!"

A loud thunder clap scared me out of searching but only for a second because once I got over my shock I went back to searching. Deep inside a drawer was a single dull silver key. I grabbed it, walked over to the glass doors, put it in the lock, twisted it with ease, and slowly opened up the doors.

Wind was the first thing I felt. It harshly hit my face then rain joined in.

Walking down the sidewalk in the rain I now feel free. I'm finally back in the real world. Away from that hospital.

I walked into the rainy night. Never to be seen again. A new life ahead of me.
