It happened quite quickly. Troops were sent out to patrol the streets and be on guard for suspicious activity. Some rebels were caught but there seemed to be no real action developing. Maxon was confused over the whole ordeal. We knew there was a threat hanging over our heads but with nothing acting on it we were left paranoid and afraid. In retrospect, the rebels had us exactly how they wanted us.
My approaching due date did not help either. While guards were scrambling to ensure the safety of the palace for both current and arriving inhabitants, maids and other palace staff were working day in and day out to make the palace presentable for the bundles of joy on the way. Maxon busied himself on rebel activity and I busied myself on baby activity.
The nurseries had to be perfect. My sister, May, was over almost daily to help pick out the perfect colors and cribs.
"America, how are you and Maxon going to deal with rebels and babies at the same time?" May asked. I knew this question was going to happen eventually, we had never actually talked about the situation directly.
"In all honesty, I'm not even sure," I said. "Maxon and I fear day in and day out that some day soon we will be attacked and we're not sure if were are going to come out with bandages or in caskets."
Mays eyes widened at the thought. I had never been so blunt before. "Can't you do something?" she asked, "Isn't there somewhere safe you can go? Somewhere away from here?"
"Abandon the palace? How would that look? The king and queen can't even face a problem directly! It's the perfect fuel for the rebels!" I was fuming. I hadn't even realized I was shouting until I saw Aspen run into the room with Maxon not far behind.
"Is everyone alright?" Aspen asked.
"We're fine," I replied, giving May an apologetic look. She looked scared. "I'm sorry for my outburst, May."
"It's okay, America. I get it your stressed. I'm just worried for you," she said.
I gave her a nod and looked toward Maxon, "I'm tired. Will you escort me to the Princess Suite, please?"
He gave me a worried look and said, "Of course, dear."
I walked into his arm and as we turned to leave I looked over my shoulder to give May one last look.
