I never thought I would be moving schools in the middle of Junior year. But here I am. Mental health struggling, AirPods plugged in, head leaning towards the window of our packed Mercedes Benz. Mom said it would be a good break from the big city, meet some nice friends, and enjoy the ocean view life. Looking out the window, I view the orange light shining onto the turquoise sea. Maybe the move won't be that bad. I mean Mom did say I could fly back to Canada whenever I wanted. But then again she is just saying that to make me feel better leaving all my friends and popular social life behind.
Just before we moved here, my parents bought me a whole new wardrobe to fit the hot weather here. Whatever I wanted I could have. I guess it was a way of bribery to get me to move with them.
"Cynth, I can hear your music," Jared yelps as he tried to kick me with his foot but gets stuck halfway due to all the cardboard boxes stuffed in here. He's only two years younger than me but acts so much more immature than a normal 15-year-old would.
I choose to ignore his comment and continue to scout my surroundings. After we cross a large bridge with the ocean underneath, I spot fishing shops and boats parked on docks. It's crazy how close we are to the water. In awe, I spot a few kids who seem my age hopping from boat to boat as if they are being chased. A blonde boy in the lead as he helps a girl with messy, brown hair hop over a boat. Maybe Kildare Island won't be as boring as I thought.
After a few minutes of quiet driving the car makes its way to the residential part of the island. Massive mansions line up one after the other. Dad makes a left off the main road, and we drive a windy paved road until we stop at a pleasant-looking, three-story, white-painted house. The windows and door are painted a baby blue. On the porch, there is a swing.
"SWEEEET. We're gonna live like kings," Jared shouts as he opens his car door.
"I'd rather live in a shack in back home than here in a mansion," I yawn as I slowly do the same. Dad accepted a new job offer (something with gold mining), and here we are. Rich. At home, I would say we were middle class. A three-bedroom house with 3 bathrooms. One for me and Jared to share, which was a nightmare, one for the main floor, and one for the master bedroom.
Looking back up at the huge house I think about all the cool parties I could've thrown in back home here. With my friends.
"You could have a foam party here. Think about it, we could fill the pool with foam and-" My mom starts before I cut her off with a mean look. Too soon.
Jared already at the front door, without any boxes, peeks into the house and then looks back at the rest of us unloading the car.
"Mom! Dad! The movers already put our furniture in!!!"
"I know hunny, that's why we had to stay at Nan and Pops for a few days," My dad communicates with him. Another perk of being rich; you pay other people to move you in.
"We just gotta bring in some of our clothes, necessities, pillows, and dishware," My mom tells Jared from the side of the car. Jared finally gets the memo and runs down the wooden pastel steps to help unload the car.
After a few rounds of going in and out of the house with boxes, Jared turns and looks at me to whisper, "Don't look now but there's a hot chick coming towards us,". Ignoring his instruction to not look, I spin around to see a tanned, messy-haired, blonde girl with a smile painted across her face. She is wearing a yellow cropped tee and white jean shorts as she makes her way across the lawn to our driveway. Box in hand, Jared decides to give her a nod. Probably him trying to give the girl a cool gesture of hello.
