I started dusting off the wooden stove, filled the pot with water, and set it aside. Mother was in town, buying food and new cloth's to sew with and make tea towels. I didn't know where or what to start cooking, when Pa walked through the kitchen door.
"Hey Pa, do you know what I should start for supper, and where that would be? I have been looking for a while." I kept my posture, although I was not happy about the new house. It's small and has many windows, and yes it is bigger then the last house, but almost to new.
"Um, I think uh.." he didn't take off his boots, which thrilled me, and started opening all of the cubbies.
"I have already done that." I said. He stopped, looking annoyed and started for the porch.
"Well I'm sorry Delilah, but I have your brother and your mother chasing me around." He started putting his other jacket.
"Just.. look in the cellar, and if nothings in there wait for your mother," and he left outside. I sighed and started for the cellar.Once I was outside the fresh air and sun felt great from cleaning all day. I was at the cellar and managed to find carrots. Once I started them on the stove mother was home.
"I'm home! I bought some new fabrics and tea cloths and other things for supper." She looked at the carrots on the stove. Then me.
"Is this all you started while I was gone?" She took the lid of the carrots off and sighed.
"I.. couldn't find them for a while and so I started cleaning and that's all I could find, the rest were very past ripe." She sighed and pushed the piece of hair from her bun out of her face. She looked at the mud and dust on the wooden floors then me.
"I'll get the broom." She nodded and started making salad.Once supper was ready for the family I started to plate my dish while father sat down. I was sitting beside Liam, who was nine years old.
" I have some exciting news." Mother said as she looked at Pa. I shoved a fork full of salad into my mouth.
"We have been invited to dinner at the Barry's," Liam chuckled and whispered in my ear, " we are eating the Barry's," I hit his ribs with my elbow, I wanted to hear the rest.
"They are more classier people and we will be on our best behaviour," mother eyed Liam. I began to think of questions I could ask.
"Do they have any kids?" I asked.
"Yes, I believe that they have two kids," mother took a spoonful of carrots.
"Diana and Minnie Mae," mother looked at Pa.
"And Mae Mae is six and Diana is thirteen." I began to rise with excitement. If I could bond with a girl my age it would make my life much easier for when school starts.
"So I want to be there by eleven thirty sharp, so right after supper is clean up then bed, no excuses," she looked at Pa and Liam, who were planning to catch fireflies afterwards.
"Mother, please! We are visiting girls, can we please just do something I want to do?" I smiled, that's what you get for laughing about the Barry's.
"No." He frowned.
