"You're here!" Hannah screams as I walk up to her at the party. She quickly stands up from the grass in the backyard and sprints straight towards me to give me a hug.
"Am I really that exciting for you to give me such a welcoming?" I ask as I squeeze out of her tight grasp.
"Of course!" She says as she puts her arm around me and leads me to where she was sitting before.
"Yo! Ricki in the house!" Ivan yells as I sit down in the the mini circle that they were sitting in.
"Glad you could make it, Ricki," Tina, Ivan's kinda girlfriend says. I would call her his girlfriend, but he says that it's complicated right now, so I don't want to push it and ruin things for him. They have had this on and off relationship since the 7th grade.
Just as I was about to ask them what they were up to, I see Matt Hanson standing by the drink table. Ever since freshman year, I have had a little crush on him. I admired him because of all his achievements in school and sports while still managing to be humble. I have only talked to him a few times because we only had one class together in freshman year, but I need to make him notice me sometime, and today seems like the perfect day.
"Okay people!" I begin as I stand up again and glance in the direction of the drinks table before continuing. "I know that you all love me so much-"
"Hardly." Hannah chimes in holding in her laugh.
Ignoring her comment, I just continue. "But I need a nice lemonade right now. Does anyone else want anything?"
"Oh! I'll take a Coke!" Hannah screams because it is her favorite drink.
Both Ivan and Tina just shake their heads.
"Okay, I will be back in a few minutes." I say as I leave them to walk up to Matt.
Just as I was about to greet him, Penny Eisenhower, the queen of getting guys into her bed, stole my glory.
"Hey Matt!" She says and he turns around to look at her. I quickly start fiddling with drinks and pretend to look for one as I listen to their conversation.
"So Matt, I have been thinking a lot about what I asked you the other day..."
"Oh really." He says with a hint of boredom, but I don't think she catches on.
"Yeah, I have." She says, as she walks over to him slowly and seductively. He tenses a bit as she slowly puts her hand under his chin. "I just wanted to know if you have made up you mind about..." Then she whispers in his ear for a second. I quickly glance and see that he starts blushing madly before he gains his composure.
"Um... You know what Penny..." He starts as she puts her face closer to his.
"What?" She says quietly as she snakes her hands around his neck to bring her face closer to his.
"Stop." He says as he worms out of her grasp.
"But Matt, I thought that you liked me?" She says with wide eyes and pouty lips.
"I told you earlier that I like you as a friend and nothing more." He says and slowly backs away from her. "But I don't even know if I like you like that anymore." He gives her a disappointing look before he excuses himself and walks off to his friends.
I look towards her and the look on her face says that she is broken. She looks like she is on the brink of tears when... wait... what? Her mood completely takes a turn and now she has a mischievous smirk on her face as her eyes follow him. Once he sits down, she takes her eyes off of him and she looks around at the party. I quickly turn my attention to finding some refreshments so that she won't notice me staring, but I am too late.
