Mishti's POV

I groaned, tossing my pillow aside as the doorbell rang for what felt like the hundredth time. I had been trying to rest, but it seemed like the entire world was conspiring against me.

Since that day when Sultan warned my stepmother, none of them had dared to mess with me. Although I was still receiving hostile glances from them, I had learned to ignore them.

Just as I was about to get up and answer the door, Kiara stomped into my room, closing the door behind her with a bang. She opened her mouth, her words spilling out in a rush.

"I just can't keep my mouth shut anymore. Things have reached home now."

I frowned, confusion etched on my face. "What do you mean?"

"Sultan's family is here. They're here with a wedding proposal. He has told his mother that he wants to marry you."

I felt like I had been crash-landed. I swiftly rose up from the bed, my mind reeling with shock.

Her voice cut through my stunned silence. "You don't need to act so surprised, Mishti. You must have given him some hints or seduced him with that innocent face and beautiful appearance. Otherwise, a man like Sultan, who has better options available, would never want to marry an orphan like you."

Her words stung, and I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. I tearfully reprimanded her, but she just went on, her words cutting deep.

"You just can't zip everyone's mouth.Papa always felt proud about his eldest daughter. Only if he was alive to see what you've become after his death... he would have hanged himself after realizing what a characterless mess his daughter has turned out to be."

She paused, her voice dripping with venom. "It's not even been a year since Papa passed away, and you're already desperate to get married. How selfish!"

I couldn't take it anymore. I turned and walked out of the room, leaving her venomous words behind. I made my way to the living room, where Sultan's family was seated.

Sadafa squealed with excitement, rushing to hug me. I forced a smile, trying to play along. But my eyes kept drifting to my stepmother, who was looking at me with a mixture of disappointment and disgust.

Sadafa chattered excitedly, telling me that she had never imagined I would be her bhaijaan's wife. But I couldn't muster up any enthusiasm.

Instead, I took a deep breath and boldly declared, "I cannot do this marriage."

The room fell silent, with Shama aunty and Aaliyah bhabi looking at me warily. Shama aunty asked, "Mishti, beta, are you worried about our cultural and social differences?"

But I shook my head, my voice firm. "No, it's not that. I just...I don't want this marriage. I cannot."

Aaliyah bhabi tried to talk to me, to reason with me. But I just conjoined my hands, pleading with them. "Please, forgive me. But I cannot say yes to this."

My hands clasped together as I whispered my evening prayer. The faces of his family flashed before my eyes, their sad expressions etched in my mind. I felt a pang of guilt, knowing that I had hurt them.

I whispered to God, asking for forgiveness for hurting such kind-hearted people. But I knew I couldn't marry him, no matter how much they wanted me to. He was nothing but a monster. Not another.

When I finished my prayer, I turned around, but my breath caught in my throat as I shrieked at the person standing in the doorway. It was the very physical manifestation of my nightmare - Sultan Emad Khan, standing in my doorway, his eyes gleaming with a sinister light.
