She was so dead now.

The crack was loud.

The feeling of satisfaction washed over my body as my fist connected with her nose and she went flying.

The air was still for a few moments, then one of Darla's friends, a cheerleader rushed over to her. I glanced around. All eyes portrayed the hate they felt towards me for breaking the slut's nose.

All eyes except for one pair.

My eyes met Hunter's and I stared at him for about five seconds, not understanding the look in his eyes.

He was the first to break eye-contact, and he rushed over to help his girlfriend of one day.

I was angry. And more that that, there was a feeling within me that I didn't understand.

Overwhelmed, I turned, grabbed my bags and rushed out of the room.

Ms Charlston wouldn't miss me.

I found a bench in the field at the far back of our school. The air was cool, and the sky was a little misty. Totally matched my mood. The grass was short and crisp, a light crunch sounded each time I put my weight on it. I sat down, upset with what had happened these last few days.

I couldn't cry. I didn't know why. I felt like I wanted to but the tears didn't come, so I reached into my bag and pulled out the checklist and turned to section two, "in denial".

I couldn't answer question one so I skipped to question two.

Q2: when you look at his girlfriend or a girl he has his eyes on, do you:

A) think of all the good things about her

B) give her dirty looks

C) wonder what he sees in her that he doesn't see in you

I really didn't want to, but evidently, from my thoughts before, C was the answer I had to pick.

I had already answered question three so I skipped to question four.

Q4: when you turn to look at him, is the first part you see:

A) his mouth

B) his hair

C) his eyes

I ticked C. His eyes were so beautiful. No matter how much I hated him, it was the one thing I had to admit.

The bell rang for second lesson and grudgingly, I stood, retrieving my bag and jacket and walking towards my chemistry class.

Whispers filled the halls. Everyone knew I had broken Darla's nose.

I ignored the states and quickly strode to my chemistry class.

"I just heard, Denise!" Jazz exclaimed once I stepped into the classroom. I rubbed my eyes. I was sure my bags were getting bigger by the second.

"What did she say?" Jazz asked. "Or do?"

I looked up at her. I sighed and shook my head. "She called me a slut," Jazz gasped in disbelief. "She was complaining again about me supposedly stealing Darren again," I explained. "She's still not over it."

"She'll never get over it," Jazz commented.

"And then," I paused for effect. "She slapped me."

Jazz's gasp was so loud that the whole class, who were noisily waiting for our teacher to appear, turned and looked at us disapprovingly.

Just then Mr Hickton walked in.

"...alkenes have double bonds and can form two types of isomers-"

He was stopped by the head teacher's secretary walking into the class.

"Can I have Denise Prane?" She asked.

Mr Hickton nodded, pushing his glasses up to the ridge of his nose.

Sighing, I stood up, looked at Jazz who glanced up pitying me, and grabbed my things. I followed the secretary silently out of the door.

Mr Daly was an old man, in my opinion he could have been ten years past retirement. But still he was here, and not in a good way. He was the crabbiest man on bad days, but because I knew today wasn't a good day I knew I was in big trouble.

His secretary beckoned me in and I entered. Mr Daly looked up at my entrance.

"Miss Prane, I'll get right to the point," he explained. "One of your classmates who is now in hospital getting her nose reset has reported you for punching her. Would you like to explain."

I sighed, not the first time that day. "She called me a slut, and she slapped me, so I snapped. I hadn't gotten enough sleep last night so I was cranky and not in the mood."

Mr Daly said nothing and then he himself sighed. "Since she did slap you, and this is your first time in my office I shall let you off with a minor punishment."

I think I should be nice to him for that, you know, try to win him over to my side. So I said, "Thank you."

He waved it off. "Your punishment is, that you will stay behind after school for the basketball practice and clean the boys locker room..."
