HUNTER'S POV:

I smirked.

She was so easy to rile up. It was fun. I loved her reaction to my body and my presence.

At least I knew now that she wanted me…something I could hold against her for a while. I lay on my bed and thought about her light brown skin, the curves of her body and imagined the softness of her lips

What?

Yes, I was attracted to her but that shouldn’t be surprising.

The next morning I woke up early and showered quickly. It was early, about 8am, for a Sunday but the basketball team were having a practice because of the game coming up between us and our rival school, McClaukin High.

How I loathed that team and their team captain. The school was more preppy that ours and most of the students ended up going to Ivy League Universities. That’s more that can be said for my school.

When my mum and I moved her at the beginning of this school year for a fresh start, she had wanted to enrol me into McClaukin High because of their reputation. She thought it would stop me from rebelling but I refused. Coming to Hillcrest Academy was the best decision I ever made.

But meeting the likes of Tristan Maximum was the worst thing that could ever happen.

Pulling on my basketball shorts and my trainers, I cursed him in my mind. He thought he was God’s gift to man. He tried to lower me down to the level of dirt but he forgot something: what goes around comes around.

Or similarly, and shorter and sweeter: Karma’s a bitch.

Grabbing the breakfast bar of the kitchen counter, I quickly left the house, striding to the basketball courts a few blocks from my house to meet my boys.

The wind was blowing so I smiled. That would keep us cool as we played. I looked round me as I made my way to practice, and decided to describe the blossom on the trees as pretty.

I frowned. It wasn’t a word I used very often.

Denise’s face quickly entered my mind. But, no, I thought, she’s beautiful.

When I entered the courts, my team was there waiting.

“Drills,” I simply said, and they got going.

Sweat was the only smell I knew until the day of the game.

***

I hardly talked to Denise the next few days as I was so focused on the game, I didn’t even have time to rile her up. We were allowed to stay in the courts the whole two days before the game and miss classes. Apparently the school honour was more important than our grades.

Darla tried to interrupt our practice the day before the big day, Tuesday.

“Baby,” she said, walking into the changing rooms without knocking like she owned the place, “ugh, it’s so sweaty in here.” She frowned. “Do you want to come out for lunch?” And she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

I sighed. “No, sorry,” I told her. “I can’t until the game is over tomorrow. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

She pouted. “Okay, baby,” I could tell she wanted to kiss me but the sweat put her off. “I’ll be at the game tomorrow, the loudest cheer.”

Unfortunately, I thought.

“I know,” was all I said to her. And with that, blowing me a kiss first, she turned and left.

There had been silence from the boys, but as soon as Darla left all I could hear is: “I don’t know how you do it” and “you’re trying man” and “she’s an A-class bitch”.

All I said was, “Whatever, let’s get back to work.”

But all I could feel was my conscience saying, she’s not who you want.
