It was all too much to take in. The human mind was built for only so much, not this much. Yet, the human mind is truly the most dangerous weapon mankind could hold.
Blue and white decorations were hung all around the city, swaying in the soft breeze the weather had to offer. Lanterns were lit and put up at every doorstep, hanging like crystal chandeliers. Signs of respect. Roads and paths were getting one last thorough sweep, the city had been thoroughly cleaned the night before.
Another sign of respect.
The city of Calanthe was buzzing with excitement, citizens were bustling around, finishing any last errands or fixing decorations in preparation of the yearly parade. All except 3 people, who were lurking at the edge of the city's borders, hidden by the trees and staying within the shadows.
"Another year, another day to celebrate this idiot" George joked, gesturing to Clay who was sitting up in a tree, looking over the city, however this time it wasn't for his job.
"Well he's alive so I mean that's a good thing...he hasn't died..."Nick's voice trailed off.
A voice from above spoke, "Yet." Clay jumped down from the tree, landing steadily on his feet, his leather boots crushing the twigs beneath him.
"Don't say that....." Nick muttered, kicking a small rock for no apparent reason.
"What do you think about breaking these fucking rules and going through that portal?" Clay says in the most monotone voice possible.
Both Nick and George looked at him like he was crazy, he was a guard for the portal, a very important one for that fact. 'Why?'Was the only question going through their minds.
"Don't give me that look, you look like you're thinking and it's scary" Clay fake cringed, teasing his two best friends.
"Ha-ha, very funny.." George muttered, a slight sneer evident in his voice.
"I say we do it." Nick pipes up, loving the idea of a bit of mischief and chaos. And so it was decided. Now, the trio just needed to get to the portal itself.
In the air, excitement danced through the city of Calanthe. Music played and people danced in the streets. Confetti of red, blue and gold flew through the air like bluebirds. Clay stood mesmerized by the joy that captivated the city. He remembered his first festival. Grand ball gowns blowing in the breeze, his father clutching his hand in the dense crowds. Oh, how long ago that felt!
Nick tugged on his arm, "Look, over there we can get into the castle. We have to get past the guards though."
George behind him huffed with annoyance, "He's a guard himself dumbass, we can just walk by."
"Ok, good idea Nick. We'll go in through there and go down through the main ballroom," Clay said, trying to prevent whatever argument may be beginning to start.
He had enough on his mind with the new fighting skills Captain Hart set for them, and he didn't need Nick and George in his ear. Don't get him wrong, he loved Nick and George wholeheartedly. They have all known each other since they were born, and they have been together ever since. Although sometimes others wished they weren't. Like the time they all stole George's dad's truck and crashed it in the lake. Now he and Nick aren't allowed within 100 feet of the house.
"How do we know they won't check us for entry tickets? We don't necessarily look the part of 'higher, rich, authority government members', do we? ... Well, except for you maybe." Nick gestured towards Clay with his free hand.
The other seemed to somehow occupy a caramel apple off a nearby stall.
"Yep, gotta agree with carrot top here," George agreed.
"Ok then, "Clay was losing his patience, "Go home and steal some of your dads' clothes, like the formal stuff, ties and shit, then meet back here... Say an hour?"
Nick and George nodded and slowly peeled off into the crowd trying not to draw attention to themselves. Guards swarmed the main part of town like wasps. If they were going to do this, they needed to blend in with the crowd.
And so blend in the crowd they did.
