Chapter Four

           "What if it doesn't work,what if we are caught and killed at the spot"a girl questioned not sure if our plan would work."Which is better dying here without doing anything,or die while trying.I would rather fight my way out even if it means risking my life than sit here like a statue waiting for my turn to be dragged to God know where"a man yelled angrily hyping the others.So when do we start OPERATION SURVIVE AND KILL"he continued as everyone erupted in laughter."What kind of name is that and I don't recall saying anything about killing or anyone dying the only plan is to survive.Chika explained sternly in a rather harsh tone.Chika was the master mind behind the plan."We just have to wait till one of them comes in,as I've noticed that only one thug comes in on fridays.Which means he is all alone here."Chidi explained calmly as everyone nodded in unison.We remained vigilant all through the day waiting for the right time to strike.Seconds, minutes and hours passed but no one cared to let their guard down.Our eyes and ears wide open waiting for the right time to strike.
            "Why all of una quiet like this,close your eyes jhor.You no dey hear me abi una don dey ment no"he yelled noticing the tension in the room."Wetin una dey do,see no try any rubbish una no fit escape from here"he warned as we grabbed him by the neck,Chika and the other men held him down while we tried suffocating him by using a cloth to block his air ways."Search him and check if you can find anything useful on him"Chika commanded running towards the door."Something like what now"a lady asked in annoyance."I don't know,maybe a key,cell     phone anything works."he yelled before leaving with the men whole I and the ladies made a thorough check on the dead thug."I found it"I yelled holding a key in my hands. "Great,this was exactly what we needed.Good work dear"Chika praised with a smile."Fast fast abeg,just leave love one side first"a lady teased Chika as he tried opening the door."Yes Hurray we are free at last"a man yelled loudly as the door opened."Wait there is another door"a lady announced as we sighted a door afar."Nawa ohhh which kind thing be this,if they catch us here we are all dead"a lady murmured instilling fear in our minds."We don't have any choice but to wait here,when the door opens we bounce on them with full force."Chika explained calmly."Abi you don dey ment,me I no follow for that plan ohhh.I'll just sit here quietly and wait for them to come in.I'll tell them that I wasn't a part of this"a man said sitting at a corner."You're right Oga, what's the worst that can happen."a lady supported with a protesting tone."Is that even a question,use your brains for once.You think they will spare us after we killed their men.In fact,in fact death should be the least of your worries right now just think about the kind of torture their going to subject you to,the kind of starvation and hunger we would have to go through.I've said this before and I'll say it again I'm going to escape from here or die trying.I yelled sternly and boldly. Everyone looked amazed,the girl who barely spoke finally had a voice,a very loud one.
           "Shhhhh, everyone quiet"Chika yelled as we heard footsteps approaching us with indistinct chatter."Sniper,this one wey every where quiet like this"one of the thugs said while trying to open the door,Meanwhile we were all anxiously waiting as we girded our lungs,hoping for the best."Run run fast Kasa"I could hear Chika scream holding my hands tightly.While running we could here sounds of repeated gun shots,but we couldn't stop.We kept running regardless of the scary shots we were hearing."Where is everyone,Chika what is happening why is no one here"I screamed as tears filled my eyes."Just have patience,I'm sure they will come.We are all survivors and we will all make it out of here.Chika replied calmly holding my hands tightly."We have to find a place to hide,it's getting dark and we can continue tomorrow but we can't just stay like this till then"Chika said gathering some dried leaves."What are we going to do with the leaves"I asked not sure of what he had in mind."I'll use it to cover you,I know it will be very uncomfortable to sleep with this dried leaves on but that is the best I can think of right now"Chika said still gathering the leaves  "And you,where will you sleep"I asked in a whisper as he turned with a mischievous smirk."Don't worry about me my dear,just try not to turn too much in your sleep and as for me I'll be sleeping monkey style"Chika replied as we erupted in laughter."I mean I'll sleep on a tree branch,it's more convenient for me."he replied with a broad smile."Okay then,Good night"I said before closing my eyes to sleep."I will protect you,so don't worry and sleep tight  Chika whispered as my heart skipped out of my chest.All the fear I had were flushed away with his comforting words and for the first time in my life I felt safe knowing I had some one I could count on."It was a very long night,even after being assured that I was safe with Chika I still couldn't get a wink of sleep, the fear of being strangled or stabbed in my sleep kept me awake all night while Chika on the other hand slept like a pile of wood,his snores were as loud as a roaring lion.At some point I feared the thugs would hear his snores and come for him but nevertheless my fears didn't manifest until the next morning when we both woke up to the sound of a gunshot.
               "Shhhhh"I screamed as I felt a hand on my shoulder.Chika was frightened he fell down from the tree and landed face down on the rough ground."O my God you scared me"I said realising it was one of the hostages."Are you okay,oh my goodness how did you fall."I yelled anxiously worried,fear written all over me as I imagined the worst."Can you walk"I asked aiding him to stand up."Don't worry I'm fine,and where are the others"he asked with a stern look on his face."You no hear those gun shots,nah dem they dey kill so.Chai I wonder how many people wey don die for there,e just dey like flying bullet."he answered feigning sympathy."You mean every one is dead"Chika asked with shaky voice."Abi you no hear me before,they killed some that afternoon,others at night while they were asleep and the rest were killed this morning."He replied as tears filled my eyes,running down my cheek slowly Just then we heard a sound coming from the opposite direction."Help me, somebody please help me"the voice pleaded,we could tell the person was really in pain."We have to help her"I said trying to flee into the direction."No it's a setup,that's the area where the thugs are I feel they are using her as bait to lure us in" the man said holding my hands."Help me,is anyone there"the lady screamed but this it was louder,it felt like she was approaching us while screaming."I can feel something in that part of the forest,I think someone is coming." Chika announced as we turned to look."Not someone,they are definitely more than one person coming.We need to move now or risk getting shot to death"he said as he raised Chika up lending him his shoulders to while I supported the other.Chika's state was really bad he could barely walk let alone run"We have to hide somewhere,can't you see he can't walk"I said dropping him on the ground slowly as I tried looking for invisible hiding spots for us."There"I yelled pointing towards a huge rock."We can hide behind it"I continued as he dragged Chika to the rock and sat still behind it.While hiding we could here their footsteps,one kept yelling find them while the other ran through the forest anxiously.This continued for a while until they all dispersed. "We don die,there is no escape for us"the man said in a whisper.I began weighing my chance of survival,what if this was just a waste.At the end we either die by their guns or die of hunger right.So even after everything we all die.
