"The Jenna thing"
~~~
Maeve plucked water from the fridge and a jumbo Muffin from a basket on the table. She looked out onto the wide backyard and smirked when she saw Spencer golfing.
"Isn't this like your third sport you've taken up this month?" Maeve said, leaning across the door frame with crossed arms. Spencer rolled her eyes and straightened her posture.
"And who is taking more AP classes than me this year?" Spencer sassed back, leaning her weight on a golf club.
"Touché" Maeve mumbled. The girls laughed as she pulled up a lawn chair and sat her bag in the chair so it wouldn't get wet from the dew of the perfectly green lawn.
Maeve cracked her neck, pushed Spencer out the way, who gave a fake surprise gasp and watched as Maeve gently placed the golf ball down, swung high and hit the ball directly into a flower pot, slightly cracking it.
"Without these classes and these extra clubs I joined, how am I gonna convince Mom and Dad to let me pursue music?" Maeve grabbed another golf ball and made the same shot, making the crack bigger. Spencer opened her mouth to answer when the crunch of the grass caught their attention.
"Nice!" Emily cheered coming from the opening of the yard, with a beautiful African American girl following after her. Both Maeve and Spencer smiled at them and waved.
"So, I thought you were gunning for varsity captain, Spence? Maeve, could just rival you." Em joked, but Maeve immediately shook her head and handed the club back to Spencer.
"Not a chance." Maeve answered, and Spencer rolled her eyes back.
"Well, I have a shot, so" Spender humbly said.
"If a Hastings has a shot, she takes the shot." Emily praised with a smile.
"Is that a drinking game?" The girl behind Emily joked.
"Yeah, it should be." Once the laughing stopped, Emily pointed to the girl behind her and widely smiled.
"Spencer, Mae, this is Maya." A look of pity flashed across both girls' faces. Maeve stood closer with a comforting smile and shook her hand, which strangely brought Maya comfort.
"Oh." Was the only thing that left Spencer's mouth, Maya awkwardly rolled on her heels.
"Yeah. New girl who moved into dead girl's house." Maya immediately looked startled by what she said and cleared her throat. "Can't believe I just said that." She mumbled.
"Yeah, I can't believe you just said that either." Spencer defensively said, now standing straight up from the crouch position of the golf club. Maeve carefully removed the club in case Spencer started swinging.
Maeve awkwardly laughed and said. "It's alright, no harm was done."
"I think Brad Pitt and I are missing the same sensitivity chip." Maya humorlessly jokes.
"It's fine. We're all trying to find a way to deal with it." Spencer said, slightly glaring in Maeve's way from stopping her perfect shot and took the club from her hands. Maeve rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at Spencer.
"Can I say something else that could be potentially insensitive?" Maya questioned, looking between the sisters. They both wordlessly nodded.
"You guys are twins? You don't seem very twinie."
Maeve laughed and pushed Spencer face gently causing her to give an amused smile.
"That's because Spencer took all the Hastings way, I'm afraid."
