"Leah... Leah run!!" I hear Rachel's as I turn to see the tall, dark creature following us, a blood trail following it. Sweat begins to trickle down my forehead, the sound of my feet hitting the ground echoes in the air as I run for my life. Its getting closer and closer. It reaches out to grab me and...
My eyes fly open as a loud gasp left my mouth. My mom giving me a startled look, turning around from the passengers seat . "Bad dream?" she asks as I nod my head. With a yawn, I peer out the car window. Familiar buildings begin to pass by, people walking their dogs, others shopping in stores, and kids licking their ice cream cones from the local sweet shop.
"Nothing's changed," I mumble to myself as the scene disappears behind me.
It's been ten years since I've been back in the small town of Willows Creek. I would have never dreamed I would set foot here again. After the loss of my brother Ethan all those years ago, Mom and Dad needed to get away from this town and anything else that brought back memories of him.
Even though he was a good bit older then me, Ethan and I were very close. I was only seven when he was killed but I remember everything about him. He was the star quarter back of Willow Creek High School. He was extremely popular but very humble. No matter what the problem was, he was always willing to help a friend. That's what I miss most about him; he was always there for me when I needed him.
I still remember the day the policeman came to our door. As a seven year old, my first thought was to eavesdrop on the conversation but I could have never prepared myself for what I was about to hear. You know how you can tell by someone's expression if they are about to tell you bad news, well I saw the fear in the policeman's eyes that day as he began to talk. All I heard was a mumble at first but I began to make out some words, "I'm sorry to inform... that your son's car...found in...ditch this morning... there was no body... blood... everywhere... we assume...animal attack."
My mothers face dropping, all the color washed from her cheeks, tears begin to pour from her eyes. Her baby boy, gone. We waited for days, hoping, that some how he was still alive. Somehow he would make it back to us, but he never came. My mom cried herself to sleep for weeks. Dad...Dad put on brave face for me, but I caught him with a tear in his eye every once in a while. The moaning and endless unhappiness became unbearable that we decided to pack up and move.
Willows Creek might hold memories of my brother but imagine leaving everything you've grown up around. Friends, your house, and even your torturous school...all gone. Of course Rachel, my best friend, could visit me; but we would no longer be able to have our weekly stop at Carol's Candies, ride our bikes down to the old creek, or spend the night at each other's houses all summer long. The place I had lived my whole life was to become just an old memory...until now. It took my family a couple of years to cope but we finally got back to normal. As normal as a family could get after losing their son.
BUMP
I snap back into reality as my dad pulls into a driveway. As soon as the car stops, I fling the door open and jump out. There, standing In front of me, the little white house I grew up in. The little swing still swaying on the front porch we're Rachel and I use to sit and talk on long summer days. Memories began to flood my mind. So many memories.
"Looks like I have some yard work to do," my dad chuckles as he lifts of the trunk of the car. I hadn't even noticed, but the grass is so tall it touches my mid-calf and the bushes are so big that they overflow on to the porch. I grab my bags and make my way towards the house. As I near the door, a sense of nervousness comes over me. For the first time in ten years, I will be passing through the front door. As I step inside, my eyes begin to travel around the house. The kitchen to the right, the living room to the left with a connected hallway that leads to the back of the house. Everything looking exactly the same since the day we left. A little cleaning is needed. Dust covering about every inch of the place. Besides that, my sweet little home still had its unique charm.
As I head down the hallway, towards my room, something stops me. A door to my right, shut, but I didn't need to open it to know what was on the other side. There, right through the wooden barrier, sat my brothers room untouched since the day he...since the day he...
My heart grows heavy at the thought of my brother. It's been so long, but after seeing this house again, memories re-enter my mind. I continue on, knowing if I stood there any longer, tears would begin to build up.
Finally, I reach my room. Slowly, I begin to twist the doorknob and push my way in. A bed frame and an uncovered mattress was all that occupied the space in front of me. Although its small, this room has been my own personal safe haven in this small little house. Oh, how I've missed it.
I set my bags down and went back to the car to help my parents unload. The rest of the night flew by. Dinner was sort of a blur. Not much conversation was passed around at the table as we gulped down hot dogs that my dad grilled. After we were finished eating, Mom decided to turn in early and after he helped me set up my room, Dad followed right behind her.
I sat up in my room and read a book for a while, until my eye sight began to blur. I place a bookmark on chapter 16 of my favorite book, Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. This story is full of monsters, demons, and shadow-hunters, those who save the day. The thought always popping into my mind, what if there were such things...
I laugh at even the thought of it.My head finally hit my pillow at 11:15pm. As I close my eyes, thoughts travel through my mind. One thought led to another until they all start to merge together. Right before I completely drift of into a deep sleep, I felt a soft smile form on my face. For the first time in a long time, I feel...
